Personally I've only visited the south so can only recommend places in that region.

nb I have put some links in below BUT often best to just visit somewhere without pre-conceived ideas about what you're going to see, enjoy the amazement of seeing in real life for the first time - so maybe ignore the links.

1. Cao Ðài main temple at Tây-Ninh. Day trip from Saigon. Amazing. Make sure you go to one of their "services" https://psamathe.net/cao-dai-temple-at-tay-ninh/.

2. Cái Răng Floating Market at Cần Thơ (you'll have to stay at Cần Thơ as it's starts up early). Don't take a tourist boats as you'll not experience much. Ask at your hotel to arrange a boat for yourself - not expensive but you'll have a much much better experience and really experience the market rather than be driven through with crowds of tourists. It's an early start (before sunrise). https://psamathe.net/cai-rang-floating-market/

3. Củ Chi Tunnels at Bến Ɖình (day trip from Saigon). Make sure you take the opportunity to actually go into the tunnels and crawl through them to really appreciate things. https://psamathe.net/cu-chi-tunnels-at-ben-%C9%96inh/

4. War Remnants Museum in Saigon. I was already fairly familiar with the war and what I found most interesting at this museum was the reactions of US visitors of different ages - quite fascinating reactions.

Lots of temples, etc. but some of the places I found particularly amazing above.

Hi Vy,

Hope you're excited for your trip!

It really depends on what you're interested in, and how long you have in the country. It's hard to offer solid advice without those two pieces of information. For general tips though, we'd say look at the period of year you're coming in. For most people, the highlights of the country are in the north, and the best season to travel the north is Spring and Autumn, it's nice and warm (unlike winter) but also outside of the monsoon season.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City probably have the best night life in Vietnam. Ha Giang is an absolute must, it's the most popular thing to do in Vietnam, although we prefer Cao Bang for the laid back vibes. Sapa and Ha Long are both popular destinations, but have been heavily impacted by the tourist industry. If you do want to go Sapa, take a look at reviews before you book, it's popular for a reason but that's had an affect on the tourism industry there. Ha Long Bay as well if you're looking for a cruise can be very busy, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay (in the same national park) are laid back alternatives. Mai Chau we'd recommend for people looking for a similar experience to Sapa, but without the crowds.

Moving south Ninh Binh and Phong Nha are both popular destinations. They're both good and worth a visit if you have the time, you can smash them in a day trip but if you have longer in the country they're probably not worth spending more than 2 nights in unless there's something specific you really want to see. Hue is great for food but as a tourist destination fairly underwhelming, it used to be popular for the abandoned waterpark but that's due to be demolished (though that's been the case for 2 years so who knows). If the weathers good it can be a great launching point for the Hai Van Pass, the most famous road in Vietnam before Ha Giang skyrocketed. This will bring you down to Da Nang/Hoi An. Hoi An is incredible, they call it the city of lanterns, though it is a bit overcrowded at times. Da Nang and Hoi An are 40 minutes away from each other, so more travellers are opting for Da Nang with day trips into Hoi An.

Nha Trang was not personally enjoyable, and we don't get good reviews about it either, but if there's something you really want to see - hey, everbodie's different! If it's beaches you're looking for though then we'd recommend Qhuy Nhon or Ninh Van Bay, both hidden gems in terms of the backpacker crowd. Dalat we highly recommend, but depending on your schedule, if you just have 2 weeks then probably not but 3+ weeks there's definitely time for a few days there, check out the Maze Bar for the funkiest experience! Finally for Ho Chi Minh City, as Ian said above, you HAVE to check out the War Remnants Museum, it's very powerful stuff and informs you a lot about the country. Cu Chi Tunnels is also a cool day trip, and it's possible to take a tour through the Mekong Delta as well.

Hope this helps for setting you off on your plans - solo travelling in Vietnam is pretty easy and very common, just don't expect too much from the busses!

Hi. Happy New Year.

I don't think you can go too wrong with HCM (old name Saigon) for a first visit.

How long you are in Vietnam will determine how much you can comfortably see.

Below information link is from this TP forum.

Google type search will give you maps of Vietnam. Find the places you are interested in and determine how long the ride will take.

Check the weather conditions (rain or less rain) for the month you plan to visit.

Good luck.

Why? Beaches? History? Nightlife & partying? wildlife? Helpful to give an indication as to why these suggestions might be of interest?

Vinpearl Island is worth visiting for a mix of fun and scenic beauty, though it can get a bit touristy. I also recommend renting a motorbike to explore outside the city. Bai Dai Beach, just a short ride away, is quieter and feels like a hidden gem. Don’t miss the Po Nagar Cham Towers—it’s a peaceful spot with stunning views and rich history
