As exciting as it is to visit the big cities around the world, which do you prefer more overall, the BIG cities or the smaller town's? for me, it depend's on where I'm going, Sydney, New York, London are worth a visit by themselves, but I do like the smaller towns in other area's more.
Big City or the small town's
A bit of a balance probably, but I do really like small towns.
One thing I've realised is that especially the types of towns that are popular day trips from big cities are often really great places to extend to an overnight stay. They are often super crowded during the day while the day trippers are there. Then when the last train / bus leaves, they can be really nice quiet places and you can experience them without the burdens of over-tourism.
Downsides of small towns are that they can be difficult if you don't have your own transport. They might also not have the amount of choice available in terms of things to do - great if you just want to relax in nice scenery, but maybe not so good if you are feeling itchy to do something.
Since we got older we never like big cities and avoid it whenever it is possible. Also the small towns are only interesting for maybe a day of sightseeing and an evening. Then we like to go back to nature. Therefore in the last years we always travelled with an RV (camper) through different countries. So we could enjoy the quietness.

Definitely small towns. The only exception is Paris and it really is a collection of small towns stuck together. Small towns always have some attraction to visit and they are nearly always unique and fun. When you go into churches, museums, stores and restaurants, people are very curious and nearly always start to talk to you. That doesn't happen in a city. It's fun.
If I am driving, esp in the USA, I prefer small towns. We don't RV or camp now although Bob does like traveling on our boat which is kind of like RVing, but more work.
But if I am flying in, I'd rather find a condo or someplace with a kitchen or at least a free breakfast, and then stay there and see the area via public transportation. London, Paris, New Orleans, San Francisco, Sydney, Amsterdam.
I love river cruising because that combines the big cities and the small towns, and those places in between.
