Hello fellow wanderers,

I'm just curious what other backpackers look for when they're trying to decide on destinations. I've been traveling since 2017 and I've noticed a bit of a difference between the crowd back then and now. I'd guess it's a change in the generations and of course COVID impacting everything! When I travelled I was looking for culture, landscape, and of course beers! Vietnam's definitely my favourite country, but Nepal and Philippines are a very close second. I was blown away by the friendliness of the locals, the stunning beaches and water, and (although I hate swimming in open water) the snorkeling was incredible. It's hard to compare the landscape of the Philippines to Nepal, one's beaches and the other mountains, but my trek up Annapurna was an unforgettable experience, and we had local guides to ask tons of questions to as well. And oh my goodness, the fooooooood!!! Just curious what everybody else is thinking of when they start their adventures!

Hi.

Budget, how long and when are things I have to think about.

Some people may have to work around family events, holidays, maybe even pending medical appointments.

Perhaps some people have to consider if they are healthy enough for hiking trails or more likely to sit on a tour bus.

Swimming at a beach or snow skiing will affect your when and where choices.

  • Throwing a dart at a map might work for some people too!

Good luck.

I'm not and never have been a back-packer. Maybe I'm too lazy to travel that way. I've traveled a lot of different ways, but never done it with a back pack. I have camped in a tent and in a pickup camper, I have traveled in our own sailboat. I taken many road trips, I have gone by rail, and I have gone on river boats or cruise ships.

I'm not sure that I ever actually looked for culture. And I don't like beer, nor do I drink any alcohol. But yes to food. I like taking photos of architecture, historic places, and landscapes. I am not a fan of beaches, but I love SCUBA diving, or if I can't do that, then snorkeling. If I can be in the water I am happier, even if it is just in a pool.

I always look for free or low expense things to do, but if I think it is worth it, I can pay to do it. I have never been to Nepal or Vietnam or the Phillipines, and I really have no desire to go. So I guess our travel goals are not compatible.

I don't think I am unadventurous - I have been to 60 different countries - just not to those three. And there are places and other countries that I would like to visit. New Zealand, Iceland, China among others

Husband and I are travelling for 40 years now. So we have been almost all around the world, mostly America, from the farthest north to the farthest south, but also Africa, NZL, Australia and for sure ever country in Europe. But we never visited Asia, besides of a few stop-over-days. I don't know why, but Asia never was interesting for us. Maybe because we like to drive by our own, mostly with an RV (campervan) or with roof-tent, what is not so easily possible in Asia.
Covid has taken a break of this, so we bought our own camper-van and since then we are exploring Europe with it.
