Hi,
I used to travel a lot and saw quit some nice places. But since we have kids, we have made 2 big journeys, both to Asia. So not that frequent anymore.
Because i used to love it, we are planning a big trip to Indonesia. But i am not that tough anymore. I get scared really easy, concerning the kids.
So before i can be ready to book tickets, i really wish to know how other travelers have experienced jamming en spoofing of the GPS system during a flight? Can you feel that like turbulence? How safe do/did you feel?
May be even someone knows about latest developments concerning this?
I really love to hear (and maybe be reassured...)

I am not aware of any particular plane that I was a passenger on having GPS problems. Or any other jamming type interference. Turbulence sometimes, but kind of expected when departures stick to schedules. Keep your seat belt on.

However, I have seen more big heavy trucks that have gone out of control smacking into things like cars, trees, fences, and pedestrians. But I don't lose any sleep over this. Even buses full of people get in accidents. I don't worry a lot over buses crashing into cars and I drive more often than I fly. You are more likely dying in a car crash than a plane crash.

Google up how many commercial flights take off in a single day in the world. Also look into what are the safest seats when flying and a crash happens.

When you drive a car you are more likely to be in an car crash than than a plane crash. (Do a Google type search for statistics.)

Up to you.

GPS interference to planes can certainly happen....and has happened recently in a particular part of the world (see link below).....BUT:

1. If it happens passengers don't 'experience' anything. From a passenger point of view the flight continues as normal. No pilot is going to announce jamming issues just to upset the passengers!

2. Commercial planes have several navigation systems. For them, jamming GPS is a nuisance, not a major issue.

Turbulence is the real risk to passenger safety....not to aircraft safety....because if you don't keep your seatbelt on sudden turbulence can easily cause injury. Most turbulence can be avoided but not all. Keep that belt on!

My daughter is a pilot for American Airlines. She is currently flying from JFK to places like London, Milan, Barcelona, Delhi, and Madrid. She's in London right now. When she flies to India, it it a 14 hour flight because they go around the hot spots (like the current altercations in Ukraine and Israel).
