The Darien Gap has been storied in an interesting story by Henri Charreire. He was Papillon...The second story of his life was called BANCO and detailed his trip through the region.

I've enjoyed following this discussion Piecar and DBloom and it's good that the thread is a sticky as questions about this topic seem to come up a lot.
I find anything about the Darien Gap fascinating! You both might be interested in this book, about 2 English travellers who went into the Gap - it's a cracking read.
There appears to be good news on the Darien Gap situation in the (relatively) near future. Car ferry service was discontinued between Colon, Panama and Cartengena, Colombia several years ago. Transporting a vehicle meant the use of container vessels which were time-consuming and quite expensive. A new ferry service between the two destinations is in the process of being re-instituted.

But, it will be a more efficient/cheaper form of getting from point A to point B without relying on container ships for your vehicle.
