For jobs I'd start by looking on backpackerboard or trademe.

It sounds like you're planning stick in Auckland. I'd take the opportunity to see NZ. With working holiday visas the idea is to do a number of short jobs to see different places.

I'd avoid the agricultural jobs - people keen to qualify for a second year do those, so employers often work you very hard.

Personally I'd try to at least do a stint in Queenstown as well as Auckland. Queenstown normally has a zillion visitors so lots of casual jobs.

Ideally get some cash behind you so you can move on after a while and explore, with some financial breathing space before you need to find the next job.

Good places to put on your to-do list include Rotorua, Wellington, Kaikoura, the west coast glaciers, Wanaka, Te Anau, and the Coromandel peninsula.

Re hostel prices, if you don't like a place, just move on. You'll end up talking to other backpackers and swapping suggestions.

You'll have a great time. NZ is brilliant, and easy.
