In drawing my first maps, it seems that the map program assumes that you'll travel to the nearest airport and fly. There are cases where I drove and cases where I cruised - is there a way to specify that? Or at least disable the airport finding routine and just draw a line from one city to another without detours to airports? Thanks.

Glad you figured it out. Just in case anyone else stumbles upon this thread, these images (from this blog post) for the steps involved should be helpful. From the trip display:
Click on the transport icon to expand the travel mode:
Click on "edit" to get options for the line (frequently that also shows an option for driving, following the available roads)
(N.B. the "Custom route" option from the final screenshot is only available for supporting members.)
