Hey!
I am yet again facing a little dilemma..We are going backpacking this september and I am contemplating with two different kind of shoes..

Which ones would you choose between hiking boots and walking shoes when terrain will have some hills, nature trails and towns/cities and weather will be hot?

R,
Henna

Which would I choose? Well, there must be no wrong answer then!

I would choose hiking boots, simply because I find them comfortable enough - even in warm climates. I can hike for days in them, so walking in them about town is the same. I don't have any fashion sense either, so I don't worry too much about looking like a savage.

I have a pair of comfortable casual shoes to wear when I need to, though.

Hiking boots, to me, seem to make sense about 80% of the time

This is a regular problem for me. With carry-on luggage only, it's often either one or the other but not both. For seven weeks in Africa, with a hike up a volcano and walks around cities in hot weather it was walking shoes (a pair of Keens) but for seven weeks in winter in Europe, it was waterproof hiking boots, great for snow and barely noticable under long trousers. Both are comfortable and easy to wear but the boots require thick woollen socks which are too much in hot weather. The shoes are fine, require just a thin sock but offer less ankle support. These are advantages and disadvantages I have to consider each time I travel.:)

Unless I were in quite rough terrain, I'd opt for the shoes simply because they are easier to pack. When the trails get rough, though, ankle support is nice. It kind of depends on where you are hiking. I must admit, I find the boots hot; I was born with sweaty feet . . .

...and keep in mind you will ALWAYS have a pair of SOMETHING on your feet - that means one less pair of footwear in your bag, if space and weight are a concern to you.

As you describe the atmosphere I think you should go for the walking shoes, because in order to cross the hill one should have a perfect pairs of walking shoes.

I've been using Keen boots for a few years too but they tend to wear out quickly. But they are very comfortable, wide fit means never any blisters. I usually travel with them as my only footwear, which helps keep the packing light.

Hi there!

It really depends on how long you will be walking and how much you will be carrying.

If you are going to be carrying a large backpack then it's advisable to wear hiking boots and if carrying a lighter backpack then walking shoes will be fine.

My partner picked up a pair of Salomon X Ultras recently and he is still very satisfied with them.

Mia, we are planning approximately 2 week holiday which will have around 1/3 walking days, itinerary is not final yet and I will have backpack with me on those walking days. So somewhere around 10-20kg of gear, of this I am not sure yet. I hope it will be more like 10 kg than 20kg but I can't promise anything because this is my first backpacking trip

Yeah, but I think I will have those walking shoes/ boots on my feet most of the time and have some flipflops (beach wear) in bag. And so if I have boots and flipflops I would need to choose will I look in the restauraunt like a savage or a beachbum
Maybe I just opt like you and stop worrying

But really I am thinking about the walking in the heat, for sure my feet will get hot. I too have sweaty feet So will walking boots give enough support while going up and down on the hills..

Wow. That's also my regular question when I travel. Alway afraid that 1 shoes isn't enough for my trips.
And I alway choose shoes I like more and feel comfotable with it.
