Exporting your TravelPod Content

With TravelPod now announcing their imminent closur, I will probably be making another script to help import that to Travellerspoint.

Our structure here should fit the content easily. I hope we can provide a good new place for Travelpod members to continue their blogging in a travel community.

If you are one of these Travelpod members looking to export your data, please register your interest here so that I have an idea of how many people want this and also so you can be easily notified when the script is ready!

In the meanwhile feel free to play around with our blogging platform and let me know of any key differences that you think TP needs to improve on.

In short: It's a two step process. Step 1 is backup at TravelArk.org. Step 2 is import at Travellerspoint.

If I could be included in this, please

I would like to keep my blogs and add to them as well over the years, not just for me, but my kids, grand kids to read what I did, saw and wrote about

I am interested! I have 10 years worth of travelling blogs that I don't want to lose, and intend on adding to! I look forward to continuing this wonderful tradition over here! Thanks for helping make our transition over easier.

Someone let the cat out of the bag about the website closing down (Travel Pod) they were just going to close it down and with the minimum of warning

I contacted Travel Pod, they first denied they would be closing, so I found out the website had been sold to Trip Advisor and they are the driving force behind this close down

I contacted Luc Levesque who set up the website 20 years ago, he has now got a job with Face Book and as the website has been sold off he has nothing to do with it, his son Jacques' Levesque is doing the website and it closes down, then I dare say he will move on

Both Travel Pod and Trip Advisor have said they will make a program to save everyone's blog/entries

So far there hasn't been any news about this program, If anyone knows how to save these entries without waiting for them it would be appreciated (just in case they don't come up with this program)

Beware, folks. Tripadvisor has stolen all our content from Virtualtourist to feed their sub-domain Smartertravel. Without any mentioning of the original authors of course. They have rearranged it a bit so no one can claim copyright any more, but a lot has been taken word by word from our texts. (I thought laws about plagiarism were so strict in the US?)
They are likely to do the same to you. That's what they mean by "making a program to save everyone's content" methinks.

My advice as ex-VTer is: Save your content yourselves using different ways, not only here but also on your own computers, and don't rely on TA at any rate. Even if that means tediously copying page by page into PDFs or Word files. TA do not care a bag of beans for us users. All they want is business, they cannot be trusted.

Kathrin are you coming to Travellerspoint now?

Derrick, per Kathrin's post above, I wouldn't trust TripAdvisor to lift a finger to help you. The fact that they were going to just close the site without warning should be indication enough. We're also not happy about what they're lifting from VT content they've saved for their own use. Nothing we can do about that, unfortunately.

As she has wisely suggested, save your content yourself. VT members were in a bit different situation than you are as we had a bulk-dowloading option set up for us by previous General Manager out of the goodness of his heart. And, of course, we had an option here.

But I also made PDFs for all the content I wanted records of so if another website I moved content to went down (once bitten; twice shy!) or if the bulk-downloaded files ever went corrupt, I had that 3rd archive. It is a laborious process but probably the best one if you want your content saved to YOUR computer. That way, you'll have it to do anything you want to with it in the future.

To add: the PDFs allow me to copy, paste and edit copy contained in those files.

Guys, this is more for being notified when Travellerspoint has an export option ready, not for bitching about Tripadvisor.

I agree with you it sucks, but we seriously want to count how many people will actually use this thing that Peter wants to build.

We get that, Louise, but based on our recent experience, I think we have reason to respond as we are to this line in Derrick's post:

We're just warning him not to trust TA or any site OWNED by TA to help him; they didn't help us. They didn't even communicate with us aside from the closing announcement. Anyway, there are good reasons for Pod members to keep a personal archive even if the good folks here at T.P. come up with a downloader for them.
