I am thinking of taking a trip up to Montana to the "Little Bighorn Battlefield" this summer and I would like to take my miniature schnauzer along. He is very well house broken and has never had a accident in all the years we have had him. My question is are there many motels will accept dog in the rooms if they are not service dogs? I would like to take him along if I could instead of having to board him. Thanks for any reply's.

Hi.

You could start with a simple free Google type search with your computer.

My own search shows quite a few hotels and motels in different price ranges that accept pets.

*Might be a good idea to bring your own wee wee pads!

Up to you.

The closest city to the Little Bighorn National Monument is Hardin, Montana, where there are several hotels/motels that accept pet dogs. Many hotels and motels across the United States do so, too. Go online to check. I used to travel around the U.S. with my Bernese Mountain Dog. Some accommodations limit size of dogs. Your miniature schnauzer would pose no difficulty.

Worth mention is that your 4-legged friend will be confined to your vehicle in most of Little Bighorn National Monument with the exception of a designated pet-walking area. I haven't done the deeper dive but most of the NPS parks and monuments also don't allow them to be left unattended in a vehicle.

Take note as well of ongoing construction that may well extend into summer 2025.

Probably a good idea to have your pet get an embedded microchip. This way if the pet escapes your care, a local Animal Control Officer can identify the pet owner.

I'm aware of the ongoing construction and he is microchipped but I am more concerned about the rattlesnakes in the area. When I was there the last time I encountered them two times at the Reno=Benteen area. Might be easier to leave him at my daughter's.

Mailman, if you intend on doing any exploring on foot outside of your vehicle, best to leave the dog with your daughter. Again, he's not allowed on any of the trails or in any of the buildings, and must be leashed when being walked along the one 700 ft. stretch of road where that's allowed.

These sorts of limitations regarding pets are pretty common in National Parks and Monuments.
