HRH, Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh has passed away
With condolences to the Queen and the family, I don't think his passing was unexpected as he'd been in precarious health for some time. Most of us won't see 99 so he'd had an exceptionally long and interesting life.
No surprise either than he'd requested a private military funeral versus a big state affair. What does surprise me some is his request for interment at Frogmore. I'd figured that both he and the Queen, when her time comes, would be buried inside St George's, either with her parents and sister in the King George VI Memorial Chapel or in the royal vault. Then again, it might also make sense he'd want his plot to be far and away from parade of tourists though the place?

I'm too am not surprised that he didn't want a big public 'do'. I'm sure that's what he'd have wanted even if Covid didn't exist (there are strict rules about UK funerals at the moment, including about how many mourners can attend).
The Frogmore burial ground is the Royal's private cemetery, with Queen Victoria & Albert plus lots of other more recent Royal burials and, as you say, it's far away from tourist hordes (Frogmore is only open to the public on 6 days a year and I believe the cemetery can only be viewed from a distance even then). I think it's very likely that the Queen will, eventually, be buried beside him.

Yup, I knew Victoria and Albert were at Frogmore, as well as Edward VIII + some others, and thought the grounds were open to visitors just one day a year. Obviously, I haven't reviewed facts on the place for awhile. Can't imagine husband and wife's plots would be split up so you're likely right. Wonder if they'll eventually get some sort of biggish memorial out there, or maybe a cenotaph in St. George's?
IMHO, that is a fascinating chapel. I spent WAY too much time poking corners in that one, and would loved to have gotten up into "Catherine's Closet" for a view from above.

Victoria's mausoleum has been deemed 'structurally unsound' and has been closed to the public since 2007. That, plus the ever-increasing need for security, is probably why the public can only view the burial ground from its perimeter on the few days per year that Frogmore's gardens are open.
There will certainly be a public memorial for the Queen when she goes.....no doubt lots of them across the country... but goodness knows where the main one will be.
Btw, this year Buckingham Palace is opening its gardens to the public for the first time (July to September). Entry is by paid ticket but you're allowed to picnic on the lawns. They've been overwhelmed by the demand for tickets but it won't surprise you to hear that I won't be going!

Wow, Prince Phillip was DMX's age when DMX was born.
My mother was taken by her mother to Windsor Castle as a child, and Prince Phillip almost accidentally ran my mother over and he stopped and looked at my mother and told her to stay off the road (in the palace grounds, of course), or something; Remind me to ask my mother about this story the next time I see her.

Seems he's not going to be buried at Frogmore. His coffin will be interred in the Royal Vault until the Queen dies. She wishes to be interred in the King George Vl Memorial Chapel with her parents & sister so his coffin will be moved to join her.
