If you are worried about the language barrier, put Google Translate on your phone. It will translate nearly any language and depending on the language, it can be very good. You can speak to it or type into it and it can speak back to you or just text. You can click on the little broadcast icon to have it talk. For instance, type in what you want to say, translate it into the language of the person you are speaking with and then click the icon to have your phone talk for you.
It's a little slow but it can be very useful. We met a lady in France who had such a grand time with hers that she insisted we speak English to her. It was pretty funny but she was very nice so we all just used our phones to talk to each other even though we were standing there together.
