Hello Travellerspoint Community,

I'm Emmanuel Katto. I'm planning a 3-week backpacking adventure through Southeast Asia and would love some advice and recommendations to help make the most of my trip. This will be my first time in the region, and I'm eager to explore the culture, landscapes, and cuisine. I'm traveling on a budget and prefer affordable accommodations and experiences.

What would be an ideal 3-week itinerary that includes Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia? How many days should I spend in each country, and what are the must-see destinations and experiences?

Any general travel tips or advice for backpacking in Southeast Asia? Safety tips, cultural etiquette?

Thanks in advance!
Emmanuel Katto

You could spend all three weeks in Thailand and not see everything. For a first time visit to this part of Asia, Thailand is tourist friendly. Thailand is one of the top countries tourists visit. Good for all price ranges. Good long distance transportation with bus, trains, commuter flights, etc.

On a budget. Everyone is on a budget of sorts. Up to you to decide how much per day you can allow for lodging, food, transportation and entertainment. This is after you know how much your flights will cost.

Suggestion. Round trip to Bangkok. Visit Chiang Mai in the North, visit a beach area good for the month you visit, return to Bangkok for a day or two for the return home. (Bangkok is about the same size as London. Good cheap city rail service.)

Got a passport? When do you plan on leaving on this trip?

Do NOT leave with a single debit or credit card. For Thailand when you bring cash, stick to the largest denominations, no dirt, stains, writing or old printings. Look into health/hospital insurance for overseas. Get in a accident or sick it will be expensive for your care.

Pull up maps of the areas you are interested in. If you still want to visit three countries research distances between major cities. From Bangkok, I have flown to almost every country in this area for short trips. For me, it was cheaper to fly round trip and purchase local flights to nearby countries.

This TP forum has a section with information on various countries, pull the link up on your computer and look it over. (Hamburger, MENU button, top left side.)

Round trip flights are usually cheaper than buying 2 one way flights. I purchase my flights directly from the airline company and not through travel agencies. Same airline from start to finish. The time of year you visit could affect the cost of your flights and hotels. High season is usually when the weather is cold back home and warm in Asia. Cheapest time in this part of Asia will be during the rainy season. (Millions of tourists do visit during this period for cheaper hotels, cheaper flights and plant life looks more alive.)

Pull up your favorite airline website and compare flight costs for different dates. (Make Google type searches your friend!) Even an old fashioned printed travel guide you borrow from your library can be helpful too.

Up to you.

Vietnam and either Thailand or Cambodia will be better due to limited travel time.
Otherwise, you can visit Vietnam only in a 3 week trip traveling North to South or reverse (It depends on what month of the year).

What passport will you be traveling with?

Research the Visa Requirements to enter any of the countries you have an interest in. Knowing if you can just show up and go through formalities to enter or you must get a visa ahead of time is important.

Research. This can be as simple as Google type searches to get you started and pulling up the particular embassy websites and read their entry requirements.

You do need sufficient funds to support yourself overseas.

When you choose too many places to visit on a short trip you do waste time going to and waiting at airports and leaving airports at your destination. You have to figure out how to get to your hotel. For hotel help, only you know how much per night you want to spend on a room each night. Only you know where you will visit first and what time of year. (Month you show up will determine the weather you get.)

It is okay to come back with additional information. Just leaving your home airport (wherever that is) will be the first test to pass.

Up to you.
