Suggest you visit Niagara Falls from Buffalo, then take the bus or train to New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., where there are many museums (many of them free) and the World War II Memorial. Amtrak offers service to New Orleans, where there is the National World War II Museum, which is part of the Smithsonian Institution. Flights to New Orleans from Washington, D.C., are reasonable. If you check bags on flights, note that Southwest Airlines allows two checked bags at no extra cost. The others charge, in most cases.
See this link: https://www.neh.gov/award/national-world-war-ii-museum
Flying around the Thanksgiving holiday will be expensive and might be challenging if there are weather problems, causing flight delays and cancellations.
Returning to Europe, you might consider other gateways than New York. Miami, for example, has nonstop flights to Europe.
Sorry I can't elaborate further. I'm currently in Honolulu visiting family. I'll be back in Atlanta July 4.

I agree that the New Orleans WWII museum is great. But from the original post, I thought that cities were not a goal and that he wanted to see smaller places. I do agree that plane tickets to get home should be purchased well in advance

What do you mean by around? like 2-3 days before/after, or or a week before/after? Anyway, I don't think I'll take internal flights, with all I've been told already, and will more likely tour around PA with a rented car.
Beside that, for my flights, since it's the company which is sending me for training, I'm not paying for it. Given that, I'm already happy that I can extend my stay more than just for the training, but I can't ask that they send me back home from whatever place in US.

Niagara Falls are already on the plan. My superior who will be along for the training already told me (he's been in US a few times already) he'd take me there straight when when arrive. We'll get to Buffalo on a Saturday, and the training is starting the next Monday, so we'll have the weekend for some touring around the area.
As for the rest of you mentioning, I'll give a look at what Amtrack proposes. But I still don't think I'll be traveling down to LA, at least not this time.

Yes - there are a bunch of Revolutionary war sites in Pennsylvania as well as Civil War sites. When I lived near Philadelphia in 1969 I visited some of those sites - in one day we went to Gattysburg (I wasn't much interested in the Civil War at this point so I concentrated on the Revolutionary war) and Washington's Crossing which was where Washington crossed the Delaware to surprise the British troops

the following day we went to Hershey, Harrisburg, Brandywine Battlefield (another Revolutionary War site) and Longwood Gardens. And at some point we went to Hagley Museum in Delaware an saw where black powder was made.
As for THanksgiving day - the Intrepid is closed that day but here is a list of what is open and what is not https://www.newyork.co.uk/what-is-open-on-thanksgiving-in-new-york/
Again, thank you very much for those information, and blog entries ❤

Thanksgiving is a Thursday. Some people get Friday off too. So Wednesday and possibly Tuesday before the holiday and Sunday and Monday after the holiday are a problem. I decided late in October to go to Bermuda for Thanksgiving. I had to fly out Tuesday and fly back on Saturday because I could not get any flights Sunday or Monday.
On the other hand, flying on THanksgiving itself - not so much of a problem.
Good that you are getting to see Niagra Falls -I've never been.

Hi, Winter in New York is very cold, so it is recommended that you bring some warm clothes. You can visit Central Park, the Statue of Liberty.
