This tread has helped me loads! I'm going to Oz in 2 months too and i'm starting to panic about what to take + i'm going to Thailand for 2 weeks first! My bag is 75L with a 15L daysack, but i'm not planning on filling it. I would have possibly got something samller but ah well, it's on wheels so I wont be carrying it unless I have to. I'm not taking a lap top but the straightners are a must, hair dryer I didn't think I would need. Will I?

might want to consider a travel towel instead of a normal one? they are tiny in size, dry quick and you can buy them in different sizes

Hey

Sachets from magazines for the first week or so is a good idea. I've been trying out the solid shampoo bars from lush, they last for ages and you can use them as a body wash and to wash your clothes too. I was worrried it would dry my hair out but it's been fine! Worth trying at least!

Everyone's different, but that's gonna be my travel must for when I leave in September. Ultra light and barely no space needed compared to 3 bottles of liquid :)

I feel your pain about the frizzy hair. I found a tiny set from Babyliss that are really thin and don't take too much room although they dont get that hot so not sure how long I'll keep them before getting fed up along the road and ditching them lol.

Glad this thread has helped, it's always useful to get other opinions on what to pack :)
Your bag does sound quite big, but it's up to you really, and like you said, it's on wheels so you won't have to carry it all the time.
Hair dryer is up to you too, you can get travel ones that are quite small but it depends on your hair really! I'm definitely taking one though.

Yeah I've been looking into one of those this week actually cos they look really good. Any idea what brands are best? Or are they all pretty much the same?

I've not heard of those shampoo bars. Might get one and test it out before I go!
Yeah I need straighteners! I'm not bothering buying tiny ones cos I don't think they'll do much to my hair really! Mine don't take up too much room anyway.

Hi all!

Your list looks exactly the same as mine! (it was helpful too.) Think I have too much stuff , i'm away for 5 months in total. I am taking my GHDs with me, because my hair goes a bit mental especially in the hot weather. I've also got a liftventure travel towel, its really good!

i was also told by a mate that the packing cubes are handy, however add weight...

Regarding the padlock, do you take numeric or key ones?

Also interested if you have things like tampons include in the "Toiletry Bag" or not bothering taking some along?

Heard tweezers might be very handy too...

still not quite sure how to reduce everything needed for a year plus in a small bag , but this was great help here. thanks!

This thread is turning out to be so useful! :) I'm glad it's helping other people too. It's good to get advice/opinions etc from everyone else. Might post my final list once I've packed before I go in April!

Yeah I've looked at the Lifeventure towels, they seem to be the most expensive though. But they may be the best quality so it'll be worth paying the extra few pounds! I'm going shopping at the weekend so I'm going to go in all the outdoor shops and compare (then order them online cheaper when I get home!)

Glad to see someone with a list very similar to mine! Yeah my hair goes rubbish in hot weather too so straighteners are definitely a must! It's so hard trying to decide what to take... clothes and shoes are the most difficult! Are you going to Australia too?

Yeah I think the packing cubes are going to be useful for organising my clothes etc, I'm only taking a couple so shouldn't add too much weight :)
I'm taking numeric ones, I'd be too worried about loosing a key! What are you taking?
I'll probably buy sanitary towels/tampons etc when I'm there. Might take a few but not loads!
Ooo yeah tweezers, hadn't thought of those! They can go in my first aid kit :)
What size is your bag? Mine's 65L and I want to have some space left over... it's not easy!

Pretty good list overall. I'm actually used to packing for a woman too since all of my stuff and my wife's end up in a single pack on every trip.

my thoughts,
If you take a computer (and I always do) you can skip the journal and just blog everything.
You don't need the openers unless you are camping out, every hostel has them.
Limit the shoes to two pairs (sandals and either hiking shoes or something a bit dressier)
get a single adaptor that works for all your electrics rather than carrying lots of chargers/adaptors
Cameras that don't require a special charger but use AA batteries are a smart choice since in a pinch you can always buy batteries if you can't charge yours
don't need the pen and paper if you are carrying a smartphone - take your notes on there.

skip the Pjs - you can sleep in a T and shorts or something else if need be.
Pick the hoody or the cardigan, no real reason to have both if you are trying to be very mobile
You probably don't need that many socks - you'll probably use your sandals as your primary shoes.
big fan of camping towels - you can find lots of them at varying prices. Picked up a bunch in Korea for $2 each and can buy from big manufacturers like Coleman for under $10 while the same will cost you twice or more at a lot of specialty travel shops.

As to leggings/tights - you probably just want a single pair as most of the time in OZ you won't find it cold enough to want them even with a dress.
and you can probably get by with a single swimsuit.

I hope that helps a bit.

Helen-

Yeah I am going to Oz too :) i'll be there from mid april until june. when will you be there and where you going? I'm starting in cairns and working my way down- going solo, eek!

I wouldn't be happy without my straightners! I packed my bag today as a test, im going in 1 week. and I have loads of room, and still taking a lot of clothes! my bag is 65 litres. Shoes is difficult, might just buy a nice pair of pumps out there though.
