Where are you starting? Why do you need someone to accompany you? Do you actually need assistance or do you just want company.
As mentioned above, the Midwest is a very large area so you need to be more specific. There is no personal information on your Profile Page so we have no idea if you are a man or woman, your age, reason for travel, if you are paying someone to accompany you.

Thousands of solo passengers use trains all the time. I would not expect any real problems since you will have many other passengers in your car.
A couple things I do when on a train. If there is overhead bag/suitcase storage rack, I prefer to have my stuff where I can glance up and see it; not somewhere I can't see it! I prefer luggage that I can lock. I keep money secure in my pocket that can be zipped, buttoned or closed with Velcro fastening.
Best might be someone you know from your home city, perhaps someone you went to school with or even a family member.
