Greeting. My husband and I are very only interested in traveling to Slovenia. According to the photos, it is a divine little country. Has anyone been and what do you recommend we take a look at? We would like to go without an agency, to organize everything ourselves

I've visited Slovenia several times and it is indeed a lovely country. Its people are friendly (most speak at least some English and almost all younger people are fluent) and helpful, the food is excellent (Italian, Hungarian and Austrian influences) and the landscape is remarkably varied for such a small country.

Llubljana is a tiny, friendly capital city but worth a couple of days to wander and explore. There's a castle, a river and some lovely cafes, bars and restaurants. https://www.visitljubljana.com/en/visitors/
Lakes Bled (in Bled, eat Kremsnita, the local speciality cake, take a pletna (rowing boat) to Bled island with its tiny church and make sure you visit Bled castle) and Bohinj, less-visited but perhaps even more scenic. https://www.bled.si/en/ https://www.bohinj.si/en/
The amazing Skocjan cave system, much less 'touristy' than the nearby Postonja cave system. https://www.park-skocjanske-jame.si/en/
Slovenia only has a tiny coastline but Medieval Piran with its narrow streets, town walls and lovely harbour (very good ide-cream too!) is definitely worth a visit. Adjoining Portoruz is much younger historically and a tourist hotspot with water sports, casinos, hotels etc. https://www.portoroz.si/en/
Ptuj ('puh-too-ee') is a pleasant town with an interesting castle/museum. It's the oldest town in what is now Slovenia and was originally a Roman fort. The town holds an ancient pre-Christian Spring carnival (the Kurent): you can see the costumes in the museum. There are two Roman mithraea open to visitors:

Maribor is an interesting and historical city set on the River Drava. It has some interesting architectur, is cathedral dates from the 1200s and the synagogue (no longer used as a place of worship) dates from the 1300s and is the second oldest in Europe. There's also a 400-year-old grapevine.https://www.visitmaribor.si/en/
If you have a car explore some of the 'wine roads' around Maribor. I always say that pound for pound (or square mile for square mile) Slovenia is the most underrated country in Europe. Ljubljana and Piran are gems and we still haven't even made it to Lake Bled and Ptuj. Predjama Castle and the limestone caves like Škocjan and Postojna are well worth visiting.
