Saugatuck, Michigan. Interesting call, I have family in nearby Holland. Beautiful part of the country for sure, my pick would have been further north. Sleepy Bear Dunes National Park perhaps?

I am going to do this by trips that I have actually taken, so it won't be a single location - it will be an itinerary. And rather than most fav to least fav, I will do it by year - the order in which I took the trip

1) 1948 - the trip I took with my parents when I was 10 when we camped (sleeping bags - no tent) out to Colorado, starting in Baltimore, Eighty Four, Elyria, Madison, Minneapolis, Dawson, Devil's Tower, Badlands, Mt Rushmore, Pierre, Cody, Yellowstone, Laramie, Cheyenne, Denver, Mt Evans, Pikes Peak, Colorado Springs (Garden of the Gods), Estes Park, Silver Cliff and Westcliffe, Nucia, Uravan, Great Sand Dunes, Carlsbad, and the St. Louis Zoo

2. 1954 - East Coast trip right after I got my driver's license - Woods Hole, NYC, Philadelphia, Charleston SC, Sea Isle, Jacksonville, St Augustine, Marineland, Ormond Beach, Silver Springs, Cypress Gardens, Tarpon Springs, Weechi Wachee, Miami.

3. 1965 - Traveling in California, Sacramento, San Francisco, Yosemite, Big Basin, Santa Cruz, San Juan Bautista, Hollister, Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon, San Luis Obispo, LA, Anaheim, Barstow, Calico, Sequoia-Kings Canyon NP

4 1997 - St John USVI by land and chartering a sailboat in the Virgin Islands (although a lot of that trip was the BVI)

5. 2003-2004 - the last trip we took down the Intercoastal Waterway and back - Wynne, Maryland, Reedville, Portsmouth, Dismal Swamp Canal, Elizabeth City,, Oriental, Swansboro, Southport, North Myrtle Beach, The Rock Pile, Murrell's Inlet, Georgetown SC, Charleston SC, Fernandina Beach, Jacksonville Beach, St Augustine, Titusville, Melbourne, Ft Pierce, Miami, Marathon, Pigeon Key, Big Pine Key, Boca Chica, Key West, Dry Tortugas, Indian Key, Miami, Key Biscayne, Ft Pierce, Vero Beach, Cocoa, Titusville, Daytona, St. Augustine, Jax Beach, St. Mary's GA, Charleston, Cape Fear River, Masonboro, Wrightsville Beach, Swansboro, Oriental, Belhaven, Alligator River, Coinjock, Great Bridge, Norfolk, Deltaville, Kilmarnock and home

Can I just say I absolutely recommend the next 3 trips I have done, just grab your car and do it:

  • Cross country Canada: From Vancouver BC all the way to Halifax NS (this is the longest and hardest BUT OH SO WORTH IT, take your time, I recommend at least a month to do it.
  • Cross country: USA from the southernmost tip of Texas (Brownsville) going north up the east coast and the 13 colonies, then go west at Washington DC latitude until you reach Seattle.
  • Cross country Mexico: Start in Los Cabos and End in Cancun, just be very careful where you stop, and do not travel by night. Always always try to stop at touristic cities and towns since those will be the calmest ones, if possible, find a Mexican friend to be with you for bits of important Mexican street-wisdom so you don't look absolutely touristy and like an easy target (I grew up in Mexico, so I am used to this).

I have done all these and they have been the most amazing experiences I have had. Love roadtrips!
