Just wondering, what thought goes in your mind while taking travel photography. In my case, I go randomly for several hundred shots per day.

I take photos to show what I am seeing. Not random shots but specific. I take photos
of my breakfast lunch and dinner,
of my travel companions,
of the buildings including parts of the buildings like windows and cornices,
of scenery,
of infrastructure (telephone poles, phones, manhole covers, cobblestones),
of gravestones in cemeteries,
of rivers, ponds and ocean, and
of animals and plants.
I take photos from the car, plane or train.
I take photos from boats or ships.
I take photos while walking.
Anything that catches my eye, I take a photo.
I look for shots that will make good paintings since my husband and I both paint. Other than that, I take pictures of whatever we've gone to see, our sightseeing du jour so to speak. I do tend to shoot 200 to 500 pictures a day. They are saved each night in a numbered, dated folder on my computer and I keep a journal so I can find what I want when I'm looking for possible painting subjects. If I know I'll do a painting of a particular subject, I'll take multiple photos of it from several different angles to help me compose the painting. Same with things my husband knows he is going to paint.

Oh I would love to do that too. I have done paintings from my photos, but I haven't done the photos on purpose for the paintings. Maybe my paintings would be better if I did.
If it's an interesting "thing" along the way, scenery, documentary style photos....... sign of museum I'm going in, hotel I'm staying at, Pigs head at a meat market, interesting architecture, the sunset/sunrise, "colorful something"........and at the end of the night while sitting at my hotel bed or on the airplane ride home(if not still taking pictures of the plane's wings and clouds and landscapes below me), I'll start deleting the lousy shots. 50 to 100 shots a day on a bigger trip, less on a mini vaca. Just did a trip to parents home in Arizona for 5 days, took about 100 shots. Week trip to Hawaii a year ago.......300+.

I often take photos when I see something special that I want to capture, not all the things I see during my trip. And I like to capture the landscapes, people, etc., not myself 
I wouldn't say take photos randomly at all, even though I take a lot. I think they fall into three groups. Firstly, records of the places we go and things we see - buildings of interest, landscapes etc. Secondly, things that appeal to me visually even if they aren't unique to a place - street photography, people, quirky things etc. And thirdly, record shots of rather dull subjects which might nevertheless be useful for my blog - hotel rooms, restaurants, food, transport. The last are a legacy of my many years writing reviews on such things for Virtual Tourist! I don't paint, but I do regard photography itself as an art form and I try always to look for the best and most interesting angles. I usually fire off a few shots as soon as I get to a place, to be sure I have the basic record shots, and then spend some time getting the more artistic ones - carefully composed and well-lit shots, some interesting details and so on.
I only delete total disasters, e.g. if someone walks into the shot or I get something radically wrong. Otherwise they all stay in a file on my hard drive, just in case, but I edit down to between 10-20% for publication in my blogs, on Flickr and elsewhere. The very best I try to sell, with some small success, on Dreamstime, so I also look out for sellable images when I travel.
I like to take them of scenery. This summer I will be taking my granddaughter to the Grand Canyon and hope to get some really good pictures. I am also hoping to work with her to peak her interest in photography, as photography has a generational place in our family. But I also like to do something else that is more fun than anything. When I see a group trying to take a picture, minus the one taking the shot, I will offer to take the picture for them. A few years ago I was in the Grand Canyon and did this hundreds of times. But I would take the good picture, then tell them to pretend they are going to fall and take a silly shot. They loved the picture every time. I take the pictures on their cameras. And those with the selfie sticks and just take their ugly, inverted pictures...

Painting thought is good one. It's a feel good factor.
Recently my wife told me to shortlist Birds and Flowers photos of mine. She has a plan to decor corner wall of living room. I felt so good.
