After the 2018 earthquake, there have been many speculations regarding whether the Rinjani summit will resume again or when it will reopen. Others have concerns about, whether is it even safe to go trekking there. Not much is known about these speculations on the internet. Even not much has been said regarding the summit yet. Anyone out there who can guide me to a good resource?

Hi berner256,

Thanks for the valuable input on Rinjani. Though I have done some research on the summit and the local region regarding safety issues, people are saying that it's now safe for trekking and other tourist activities. I haven't found any concrete proof that it's safe though. Do let me know if you find anything on the new update. I am gonna look around too.

There can be no assurance of safety when hiking on active volcanoes, as recent events have shown. You have to weigh the risks with the information available. I've hiked on active volcanoes several times and the experiences were amazing. But there are hazards; and you constantly have to be aware of changing conditions, such as weather. Lava rock can be razor sharp; and once, hiking near a steam vent, I fell and cut my hand (I still have a scar as a reminder). What you think is solid ground might not. You can be stuck in knee-deep mud as I once did. Rocks can be loose on steep slopes. It would be best if you could find others to hike with, rather than solo. Also, get acquainted with volcanoes before you go. For example, know the difference between pāhoehoe and ʻaʻā lava.
