Hello all!
We are planning a 3-week trip to Madagascar for this August. We have just started collecting material. And we are looking for advice on an itinerary for these 3 weeks. Anyone has the experience to recommend us how to plan this? We love nature and wildlife, but we are also into culture, music etc.
Also, is it recommended to rent and drive on our own around the island for these 3 weeks?
Thanks,
Stella

Stella,
My wife and I spent 26 days in Madagascar in 2016. The best way to travel in Madagascar is with a driver/guide. You do not want to drive yourself. I am not even sure if you can rent a car for self drive. Everything is arranged at the hotels that you will be arriving with a driver.
After much research I chose an agency called Espace Mada who I highly recommend. Everything was quite professional. I enjoyed working with them to plan our trip. All our bookings went off without a hitch. Our driver was amazing.
We did the Big Boucle which included a trip on the Tsiribihina River which I thought was one of the most amazing travel experiences of my life as you relax on board watching the life on the river.
My first posts on this site were a rewrite of this trip.
Madagascar is one of my all time favorite places. August was a great time to visit.
Bob

Friends of mine have been in Madagaskar, with a tour. And they told me, they never would self-drive there. Roads are absolutely bad, near the nationalparks almost not visible, no signs on the road, a.s.o. Even as they had a driver/guide they didn't know every day if they could reach the booked hotel in time.

You could also hire an independent guide and then decide your own itinerary. Definitely wouldn't recommend self driving in Madagascar unless you're prepared to camp out when the car becomes stuck or you become trapped for a few days by flooded rivers. The conditions there make it difficult to get around.

Hi, I suggest you ask a local tour guide who will recommend this trip to you based on your preferences. Also, I don’t recommend you to travel by car.
