With all the international expats and tourists flocking to the city, can anyone actually claim to know what it’s like to live in the “real” Dubai? Are the locals hiding out in the desert, sipping tea and shaking their heads at the extravagant lifestyles around them?

I very much doubt they're 'just waiting' for you (or anyone) to ask..or that they all have 'secret desrt lives'.... but I'm sure if you got to know some 'locals' they'd be happy to talk about their everyday lives.

I visited Dubai some years ago (little time, just a long stopover) and I was lucky because my hotel was in the Deira neighborhood. In that neighborhood there are several mosques and souqs and, at least, they represent a little bit of "Arab taste".

While Dubai is known for its diverse expat community, there are still locals who preserve their cultural heritage. Emiratis play a key role in maintaining the traditions of the UAE amidst the city's modernization. It's fascinating to explore how they blend both worlds!
