When I travel, I always use public Wi-Fi, but it never came to my mind that I need to use a VPN until I saw this article. So does anyone use a VPN with free Wi-FI? Is that really necessary?

We use a VPN on public wi fi quite frequently. The risk of baddies trying to steal your info is low, but certainly not unheard of.
There are times when public wi fi does not call for a VPN, and times when it does - entering passwords and making purchases or entering ANY confidential info comes to mind. Certain seemingly tolerant countries may block websites you rely upon at home for news - most folks think of China or Middle Eastern countries, but it's more than that. VPNs are great for bypassing these geo restrictions.
Back to safety....
Even a non sophisticated hacker can spoof or "establish" a public network and get loads of people to connect to it - in that case you are giving away everything. Even in a case like that you are protected with a VPN if you use it. Our service is $60 for 2 years of unlimited service - pennies a day.
They make sense. Many services offer a free trial. Again, a hacker exploiting public wi fi is rare but we all know without a doubt that threat is real. Most folks skip using a VPN and trust nothing bad will not happen to them, though.
A friend mentioned that there are a few free VPNs although I've no idea which ones, but I guess a google may show them and I've no idea if they're any good...
It is something I need to look into properly in the next few months, so I'm interested in what other have to say here.
Free plans limit the amount of data, number/location of servers, speed, etc. Paid plans are limitless with data usage and offer loads of servers in upwards of 50 countries.
Free plans (of any service) are always limited compared to paid plans. Alas, a free plan (or trial) is a great way to test drive it and learn how to operate the bells and whistles before you dive in fully and take advantage of all the options.

yes you is right.
It really depends where you're travelling. Of course, it's always a good idea to be safe, but it's a whole different thing to use public wifi in US and in Europe. If you're travelling in U.S. it's necessary to use VPN, it's a big issue of stealing info when using public wifi over there.
I've been using -snip- for a while now and haven't had any problems. You should check it out or look up for other articles and forums where you can find comparisons of few VPN's.

yes you can use VPN for the security in public wi-fi..bit it can not be insure you.for total security.
public wi fi is always make risk.
