Persepolis is located about an hour from Shiraz in the Fars Province and was founded by Darius I in 518 BCE. It used to be the capital of the Achaemenid Empire. An impressive palace complex was built here inspired by Mesopotamian models. The importance and quality of the monumental ruins make it a unique archaeological site and therefore is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Getting There

There is no public transport going to Persepolis. The closest city reachable by public bus is Marvdasht, 14 km away from Persepolis, from there one need to charter a taxi to the sight. It's worth mentioning that the main highway bypasses Marvdasht and Persepolis and thus all long-distance buses circumvent them.

• By bus: minibuses (20,000 rials) or a shared taxi (50,000 rials) going to Marvdasht can be found at Ali Ibn Hamze Terminal in Shiraz. Besides, almost all of them make a stop or start their way from the bus stop near Qur'an Gate in Shiraz.
• By taxi tour: taxis can be hired for a half day tour to Persepolis (including visits to Naqsh-e Rustam and Naghsh-e-Rajab sights) for 25$ from Shiraz. Full day tour that would additionally include Pasargad costs 40$.
