Like much of Thailand, the weather here is of the tropical variety, meaning hot and humid conditions year-round. Temperatures hover around 32 °C during the day and 25 °C at night, with just a few degrees difference between the warmest and coolest months. Humidity is mostly around 80% or more, so be sure to drink enough fluids! November to February in general is the driest time of the year, with just some regular showers (later afternoon) and a mix of clouds and sun. Rain increases from March onwards, reaching a peak in August and September before preparing again for the somewhat drier and cooler season.

Getting There

By Plane

Krabi Airport (KBV) has regular connections with Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Singapore. Thai Airways International operates flights on the Bangkok - Krabi route, with fares starting from THB3,140 for a round trip. Budget airlines like AirAsia fly to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and other destinations, with one-way tickets from Bangkok starting around 1,200 THB. Bangkok Airways also flies to Bangkok and Koh Samui.

For the winter 2024-25 high season, thirteen airlines are operating flights to Krabi Airport, including international carriers like Flydubai, Scoot Tigerair, LOT Polish Airlines, TUI Fly, Jetstar Asia Airways, Shanghai Airlines, and China Eastern Airlines. There are also seasonal charter flights from TUI Fly, LOT Polish Airlines, and Neos Airlines. This has increased flight traffic to Krabi by more than 160 flights per week compared to previous years.

The airport near Phuket is further away but offers more flight options.

By Train

You cannot reach Koh Lanta directly by train as there is no railway on the island. However, you can take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani (9-12 hours), then connect via minivan or bus to Koh Lanta (5-6.5 hours). Train tickets from Bangkok to Surat Thani cost between $8-50 per person, with sleeping berths in 2nd class offering a comfortable option for the overnight journey. Trains depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station in Bangkok.

By Car

From Krabi, you can drive to Koh Lanta via road and car ferry. The Lanta Car Ferry connects Koh Lanta Noi to the mainland (Koh Klang), operating from 5 am until midnight daily. During high season (December to March), 3-4 ferries of varying sizes operate continuously. The ferry crossing itself takes just a few minutes, but queues can be long during peak afternoon hours. A bridge connects Koh Lanta Noi (Little Lanta) with Koh Lanta Yai (Big Lanta).

By Bus

Direct buses run from Bangkok to Koh Lanta, departing from Bangkok's Khaosan district around 7 pm and arriving on the island at approximately 11:30 am the next day. These combined bus and ferry tickets cost around 1,200 THB (37 EUR) and can be booked through agencies like Montanatip.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from Bangkok to Krabi (12-14 hours, 600-1,000 THB) and then catch a minivan to Koh Lanta. Minivans depart hourly from Krabi Bus Station between 8 am and 4 pm, with the journey taking 2-4 hours depending on car ferry queues. Tickets cost 350-450 THB, including the ferry crossing.

From Krabi to Koh Lanta, Good Luck Lanta Tour operates bus services with tickets starting from 350 THB. The journey takes approximately 2 hours 20 minutes.

By Boat

The most scenic route from Krabi Town to Koh Lanta is by passenger ferry, departing from Klong Jilad Pier. During high season, ferries leave at 11:30 am and 2:30 pm, calling at Koh Jum before arriving at Saladan Village on Koh Lanta at 1:45 pm and 4:45 pm respectively.

From Phuket, speedboat services operated by Bundhaya Speed Boat and Satun Pakbara Speed Boat Club depart from Rassada Pier. Morning services leave at 8:30 am and 10:00 am, arriving at Koh Lanta's Saladan Pier approximately 1.5 hours later. Additional departures are available at 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm.

Koh Lanta is also connected by ferry to numerous other islands including Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lipe, Koh Ngai, Koh Muk, Koh Kradan, Koh Buloan, and even Langkawi in Malaysia. These services typically operate during the high season (November to April).

Getting Around

By Car

Renting a car on Koh Lanta gives you the flexibility to explore the island at your own pace. Several rental agencies operate on the island, with prices typically starting from 1,500 baht per day for a small car. This option is particularly convenient for families or groups traveling together. While the main roads on Koh Lanta are generally well-paved, you might encounter some potholes and rougher sections, especially when venturing to more remote areas of the island.

If you prefer not to drive yourself, hiring a car with a driver is another option. This typically costs around 1,500 baht for 4 hours or 2,200 baht for 6 hours of exploration. When arranging this service, be sure to negotiate the total price and route beforehand to avoid any misunderstandings.

By Public Transport

Unlike many Thai tourist destinations, Koh Lanta has no formal public transportation system. Despite past attempts to establish bus services on the island, these initiatives have not been successful. The buses you might occasionally spot on the island have been out of service for quite some time.

Instead, visitors rely on taxis, which come in three varieties:

Traditional air-conditioned cars

Converted pickup trucks that can accommodate up to 8 passengers

Tuk-tuk taxis (motorbikes with sidecars that fit 3-4 passengers)

Taxi fares vary depending on distance and can be negotiated. Some typical rates include:

Saladan Pier to Klong Dao Beach (2 km): 40-80 baht

Saladan Pier to Bakantiang Beach (20 km): 300-400 baht

Klong Dao Beach to Klong Khong Beach (8 km): 100-200 baht

Note that ride-hailing services like Grab are not currently available on Koh Lanta.

By Foot

Walking is a pleasant way to explore the immediate vicinity of your accommodation, especially if you're staying near one of the beaches. The island's relaxed atmosphere makes strolling along the shoreline particularly enjoyable during sunrise or sunset. However, with Koh Lanta stretching over 20 km in length, walking is not practical for exploring the entire island or traveling between distant beaches.

By Bike

Renting a motorbike (scooter) is by far the most popular and convenient way to get around Koh Lanta. This option provides the freedom to explore the entire island without the expense of multiple taxi rides. Rentals typically cost 200-300 baht per day depending on the season, with gasoline available from roadside stalls for 30-40 baht per bottle.

The island's traffic is relatively relaxed compared to busier Thai destinations, making it a good place for beginners to learn to ride. While the main roads are generally well-paved, you'll encounter some hilly sections, particularly when traveling between the east and west coasts or heading to the southern part of the island.

For those who prefer pedal power, bicycles are also available for rent at 150-200 baht per day. Cycling in Koh Lanta can be a pure pleasure with quiet roads that aren't too demanding. The island offers varied terrain with some challenging hills, especially on the southern end. Starting early in the morning is advisable to avoid the midday heat, and bringing plenty of water is essential. A recent cyclist recorded nearly 27 kilometers in a day's exploration, noting that most of the route offered motorcycle lanes and occasionally even dedicated bicycle lanes.
