Introduction

Castile and León (Spanish: Castilla y León) is one of the 17 regions of Spain. It occupies a big area to the northeast of Madrid. In this region you will find some beautiful cities, like Salamanca that is extremely popular with exchange students, Segovia, with it's Disney like Alcazar and Roman aquaduct, Burgos, with its beautiful cathedral, Valladolid and León.
Geography
Measured in square kilometers the region is the biggest of all the Spanish regions. Castile and León borders on Portugal and Galicia in the west, Asturias and Cantabria to the north, Aragon, Basque Country, and La Rioja to the east, the Community of Madrid and Castile-La Mancha to the south-east, and Extremadura to the south.
The region is set in the North-West of Spain, but nowhere does it border on the sea. Most of the region is occupied by the plains of central Spain, and in the north, where it borders the regions of Cantabria and Asturias, you can find the imposing Picos de Europa.
Castile and León Region embraces nine provinces, which are Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Vallalodid and Zamora.
Getting There
By Plane
Valladolid Airport has a number of flights. Air Europa serves Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife-North. Iberia, operated by Air Nostrum, has flights to/from Barcelona, Ibiza, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Málaga, Menorca, Palma de Mallorca, Paris, Tenerife-North and Valencia. Finally, lowcostairlines Ryanair serves Brussels-South, London-Stansted, Milan-Bergamo and Weeze (near Düsseldorf). Note that quite a few flights are only seasonal (mainly April-October).
