Formentera
Travel Guide Europe Spain Balearic Islands Formentera
Introduction
Photo not found
Formentera is one of the Balearic Islands, and is located very close to Ibiza, with only 6 kilometres dividing the two islands. It is the least known of the islands, which is not weird considering it only has a population of around 10,000. In summer season this island does get more crowded with people that are spending their summer vacations. Formentera is popular with nudists as nude sunbathing is allowed on most of the beaches, besides that one will also find many hippies coming to the island
Geography
The island is pretty flat, with its highest point reaching only 119 metres. The coastal area consists mainly of cliffs, with the sandy beaches mainly concentrated on the Northern side.
Cities
Capital of the island is San Francisco de Formentera (Catalan: Sant Francesc de Formentera).
Weather
The Balearic Islands hve a typical Mediterranean climate with warm and dry summers and mild but relatively wet winters. Summers last from June to September when temperatures during the day average between 24 °C and 28 °C with nights generally still above 20 °C. Occasionally, temperatures can hit almost 40 °C. Winters last from December to February with temperatures around 13 °C or 14 °C and nights around 10 °C. This is also the time when most rain falls, although autumn and spring have a good deal of showers as well and even summers can have some heavy showers now and then. Occasionally, snow, especially in the higher parts is possible.
Getting There
By Boat
The only way to arrive to Formentera is by boat, as there is no airport on the island. Crossing carried out by Balearic can be made from Ibiza Town, which takes about 35 minutes by catamaran, or 1 hour by normal ferry. You can also get to Formentera directly from mainland Spain, if you catch a ferry in Denia, which lies about 90 kilometres to the west of Formentera. This connection is only available in summer. In summer there are also other privat companies that can take you to Formentera (e.g. from Sant Antoni de Portmany on Ibiza).
Getting Around
By Car
If you arrive by ferry, you can take your own car to Formentera, but at the port there are also plenty of options to rent a car upon arriving
