Alicante Airport

Introduction

Alicante International Airport (ALC), located about 9 kilometres from Alicante, Spain, is a major airport for the southeast of the country. Many lowcost airlines serve the city with Ryanair having the bulk of flights. Easjet has quite a few flights as well, and there are many more budget airlines and some regular airlines that offer flights. Most flights are to countries in the west and north of Europe with some domestic flights.

The airport is the 5th busiest airport in Spain and the 40th busiest in Europe, based on the passenger numbers for 2016. The airport has grown considerably over the last 10 years due to the low-cost airlines, and in 2016, it saw a record number of passengers with just over 12.3 million. This was a 16% increase on the 10.5 million passengers it saw in 2015.

Getting there and away

• Bus: Subus and Alsa provide access to the airport by bus. The first one to/from Alicante and Elche, the latter one to/from Benidorm and Murcia. A ticket to or from Elche will cost €1.50, to or from Benidorm costs €9.45 and to or from Murcia costs €5.22.
• Train: There is no train station at the airport, but there are provisions to extend the line form the city to the airport in the future. At present, there is a bus service available (C6 Bus, also known as Line C6) which can take you to the train station in Alicante. A ticket costs €3.85 per ticket. At the station, you can catch a train or TRAM to many destinations, including the TRAM to Benidorm at a cost of €3.75 per ticket.
• Taxis and car rental facilities are available at the airport as well.

Airlines, Destinations and Terminals

Alicante airport has three terminals, Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal NAT, however, Terminals 1 and 2 are not in use. Terminal NAT (which stands for 'Nueva Área Terminal') is a new terminal that was built in 2011 to cope with the extra demand in passenger numbers. This terminal was designed to replace Terminals 1 and 2, hence their closures, but they can be reopened if necessary. Terminal NAT has the capacity to handle 20 million passengers per year, so the reopening of Terminals 1 and 2 is unlikely in the near future.
