Sydney Airport (SYD) is Australia's busiest airport, handling 32.9 million passengers in 2008, averaging nearly 90,000 passengers a day. It is one of the oldest continuously operated airports in the world, having been in operation since its first flight in 1919.

The airport is located 9 kilometres out of Sydney's CBD in the suburb of Mascot. Its international terminal is undergoing a major redevelopment that will provide a new baggage system and more space for shops and waiting areas.

There is a curfew on flights during from the hours of 11:00pm till 6:00am, with only limited flights allowed during this period. This is to reduce the noise impact of the aircraft on the surrounding suburbs.

Getting there and away

Connections to the airport from the city are quite good.

• You can expect to pay between $20 and $30 for a 20 minute taxi ride to the city.
• Train services to the city cost around $15.80 on Airport Link and take 13 minutes. The trains are regular suburban trains and don't really have any special areas to store luggage.
• Shuttle buses can drop you at the door of your hotel/hostel and cost a flat rate of $12 and can take up to 45 minutes.

Getting around

Terminal 1 (International) is separated from the other two terminals by a runway. Passengers with connecting flights should allow longer transfer times. A fee-based shuttle service is operated by the airport, but it is also quite possible to walk if you prefer.
