Road Town
Travel Guide Caribbean British Virgin Islands Tortola Road Town
Introduction
Road Town is the capital and largest city on the British Virgin Islands. It has a total population of about 10,000 inhabitants and is located along the central southern coast of the main island Tortola. Apart from being the administrative hart, the town is also functioning as a major port for many types of vessels, including large cruise ships which bring in many tourists of which the economy of both Road Town and the entire country is relying on. There are good facilities for travellers here, as well as good connections to neighbouring islands and to the United States Virgin Islands. In and around town the major landmarks are Fort Burt and Fort George, two colonial forts which are well worth a visit, also because of the views over the city, harbour and island.
Weather
Road Town has a very pleasant and tropical climate with generally warm and humid weather. The seabreeze makes things relatively mild though and water is never far away. Temperatures generally average around 30 °C during the day yearround and 23 °C at night. December to May is the dry season, where July to October is the rainy season, but this generally means some showers at the end of the day instead of days of rain on end. Hurricanes are possible though from August to October.
