Getting there and away

  • Rail: The BART Station SFO, located in Parking Garage G of the International Terminal, is the only direct rail link between the airport, the city of San Francisco, and the general Bay Area. Ticket machines are located directly inside of the BART station as well as discount tickets for seniors (age 65 and over) can only be bought at the International Terminal ticket booth just outside of the station ( S. Rikala 2017).
  • Bus: SamTrans, San Mateo County's transit agency has three lines connecting Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and the International Terminal to San Francisco and the Peninsula down to Palo Alto. Routes KX, 292, 397 and 398 stop directly at the Airport terminals.
  • Car: The airport is located on U.S. Route 101, 13 miles (21 kilometres) south of downtown San Francisco. It is near the US 101 interchange with Interstate 380, a short freeway that connects US 101 with Interstate 280.
  • Taxi: Taxis depart from designated taxi zones located at the roadway center islands, on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim Level of all terminals.

I lived less than 1 mile from the San Francisco International Airport growing up in San Bruno and then slightly further away in San Carlos. The airport has been modernized over the years and is laid out so as to be easy to get around. Sam Trans and BART provide direct service to the airport whereas Cal Train provides service to Millbrae or San Bruno and requires a transfer to BART to get to the airport. I would be happy to answer any questions as well as to share my money saving tips using BART to access San Francisco as well as the Peninsula.
