Aleppo is located in the central northwest of Syria and is the largest city in the country, with well over 4 million inhabitants. Aleppo, like Damascus, is one of the oldest inhabited places anywhere in the world, since the 11th centruy B.C.

Weather

Aleppo generally has hot summers and moderately mild winters. From June to September, maximum temperatures average around 35 degrees Celcius, with a record high of 47! Nights are generally above 20 degrees during this time. December to February is wintertime with average highs between 10 and 13 degrees Celcius, dropping to a few degrees above zero at night, but lows of -13 degrees have been measured.
May to September is dry, while December and January have highest precipitation, around 90 mm a month on around 10 days each month.

Getting There

By Train

Every Sunday around 9am, a sleeper train leaves Haydarpasa station in Istanbul for Aleppo, arriving on Mondays around 2pm. In the opposite direction the train leaves Aleppo station on Tuesdays around 11 am, taking over 30 hours to reach Istanbul early evenings on Wednesday.

There is a weekly train travelling from Damascus to Tehran, stopping in Aleppo and Tabriz in Iran along the way. The journey contains two stages, one to Lake Van and one from Lake Van onwards.
