Maupiti

Introduction

Maupiti is one of the Leeward Islands of French Polynesia and is located some 40 kilometres west of Bora Bora.

Geography

Maupiti is located in the western Leeward Islands in French Polynesia. It is the westernmost volcanic high island in the archipelago, 40 kilometres west of Bora Bora. The central island of Maupiti has a high peak of 380 metres and a surface area of 11 square kilometres. The lagoon has large and flat coral islands in its northern reef half and two motus on both sides of the pass at its southern end.

Sights and Activities

Maupiti has 30 archaeological sites whiche are clearly signposted. The temples (marae) of the gods covered the four corners of the island.

Weather

Located within the tropics, the climate of the Maupiti is tropical. The average temperatures are around 28 °C to 32 °C during the day and still well above 20 °C at night. The hotter months are between November and April and this is also the wet season with much more rain compared to June to September. Occasionally tropical storms hit some of the islands during this time, though certainly not every year.

By Plane

Maupiti Airport (MAU) offers flights with Air Tahiti to/from Bora Bora, Raiatea Island and Tahiti.

By Boat

• The small cargo ship Maupiti Tou Ai'a goes to Maupiti from Papeete once a week, leaving on Wednesday evening, arrives at Maupiti the following morning, and returns to Pape'ete on Friday.
