Loire Valley

Introduction

Along the Loire River Valley in western France, leading towards the Atlantic are dozens of beautiful Chateaus and fortresses. One can spend several days traveling along the river valley enjoying the different homes and sights. Remember that many of the Chateaus are private residences and are not open to the public. Luckily many of them are open to the public and some have even been converted to hotels and guest houses. The Loire Valley is a truly great place to spend a few days and is now UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Getting There

By Train

TGV railway stations at Tours, Nantes, Angers, Saumur, Le Mans. Regional stations all through the Pays de la Loire départements.

By Boat

Cross-channel ferries from the UK to Caen (3-4 hours), Cherbourg (4-5 hours), Le Havre (3-4 hours), Calais (6-7hours). Good road links into the Maine et Loire département and beyond.

By Air

Airports at Tours, Nantes and Angers. Rail links to Tours, Angers, Saumur & Le Mans from Paris and Charles de Gaulle.

Getting Around

By Bike

The Loire Valley is a popular destination for cyclists. The Eurovelo Route 6 follows the Loire from Digion to St. Nazaire.
