Great Apple Invasion and other stories from Jajce

Community Highlights Europe Great Apple Invasion and other stories from Jajce

Next form of getting from A to B would be a bus. More accurately bus from Zagreb to Jajce.
This would include border crossing between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which went fast and the nearer we get to Jajce the more amazing the scenery got. The hills got steeper, greener and the rivers between the hills more blue.

And at our destination, between our home for next few days and the bus stop, there were famous Jajce waterfall and our accommodation was situated right in the beautiful old town.
This was my kind of place!

Our hostess was waiting for us when we arrived and showed us our flat, which had even a little outdoor patio. She was very kind and told us not to hesitate to contact her if we needed anything. She had even brought us some soda and fruits, how nice!
Due to our bus being late we didn’t have too much time to explore, but we did went to have beers and did some grocery shopping before we had to do the responsible thing and finally do our laundry. It had piled up little more than we had anticipated. We knew that in Budapest we would stay in a hotel for our stay so there wouldn’t be a place to dry anything but I had hoped that in Zagreb we could do first batch. But our accommodation might have been slightly more decorative than practical.

I had texted our lovely hostess last night and agreed that she would bring us a drying rack this morning around 11AM so we had a lazy morning, making and eating an (almost) gourmet breakfast and making an good use of our patio. The air was little bit chilly at this hour but it was becoming a beautiful day!

(Almost) Gourmet Breakfast

The chilliness of this morning was soon forgotten when we started our roaming through Jajce.
On arriving we had had our first look of the waterfalls but still we headed that way first. There were viewing platform which had entry fee, which, even not being expensive wouldn’t be worth it. We could see Pliva Waterfalls very well without paying anything. We also looked ducks playing in the water. The river flow through kind of terraces, going lower and lower the nearer it got to the waterfall. I don’t know if terrace is the right word for it and google didn’t help me, so I am using it, play along. So, the ducks were swimming in the river, looking for food, and when one got too close to the edge the flow grabbed him and just when he would drop to the lower terrace he took on flight. It was fun to watch. The ducks didn’t know but their waterfalls are only ones in the world that are situated in the city center.

River Terrace?

Yesterday on our way home from the grocery shop, I had noticed a sign to the Catacombs and to the Castle, so we headed towards those.
The sign was at the bottom of the stairs lead up to the fortress. On the first landing the stairs branched to left and right. On the right the steps continued towards our destination. But before we head that way I want to share some alarming information with you. Steps on the left didn’t go much higher but they were the starting place of the Great Apple Invasion! There were huge pile of apples just laying there. Waiting. Biding their time. The right time for attack and invade the castle!
As we continued our way up we noticed that Apple Army had sent scouts everywhere..They were beside the path..At the fortress, behind the walls, behind the doors…
Or I might have left my imagination run wild and mix reality with the Killer Tomatoes movie. You never know. Alas, now you have been warned.

Jajce Catacombs were carved in to the rock around 1400 and the Crypt is eternal resting place of the Hrvoje Vukcic Hrvatinic, the Grand Duke of Bosnia and the founder of this lovely town of Jajce.
The fortress is part of Mediaeval Town complex dating back to 13th century. It is last of the remaining strongholds of Bosnian Kingdom.

Day was becoming very warm and the fortress was situated above the city so roaming around the fortress was fun but hot business!

We had set a amount of steps we would get on our holiday each day, and today we just aimlessly went walking. Today too, we headed up, but not to the fortress but on to the mountains on the other side of the city. Google told that there were hiking trail which we went to find. There being no signs, we can’t be 100% sure we found it though. What we can be sure of is that the Apple-vasion had reached this side of the town too! And that on our way back down we saw nice terrace which we of course had to go looking for. It wasn’t too hard to find and was totally worth it! View wasn’t as pretty from here but the Nutella Pancakes I ordered were too good to describe!
