Ischia Island Italy

Community Highlights Europe Ischia Island Italy

Gee we are really into islands on this trip!
Located in the Bay of Naples Ischia has a population of 60,000 and is roughly 7 km by ten km in size. The centre of the island is mountainous, and there is a volcano that hasn't erupted since 1301. The underground is volcanic, and hot springs have made Ischia famous for its thermal baths. The dish Ischia is known for is rabbit. Nope we won't be having any.
Very picturesque! Really lush. Umbrella Pines, vines, flowering trees, fruit trees.

We had really good coffee and a fruit filled croissant at a pub around the corner, it looks pretty sketchy but is busy with locals at 10 am. Great coffee, two thumbs up from Jeff who is pretty much a connoisseur.
We sat in the garden when we got back to the hotel, it's so pretty, now I am seeing a lot of tiny lizards. Very skinny with tails twice as long as the body.
We are really close to a beach. There are stairs leading down from our terrace with a sign that looks suspiciously (and kind of obviously because of the symbol that accompanies the words) like keep out, but Jeff says come on we can't read Italian. So he heads down and of course I now creep down 74 cement stairs without a rail but there's a wall to steady yourself and hey this is a shortcut. Three minutes on flat ground and we're at a small sandy beach - Nobody else around.
Jeff swims and I put down a towel to sit on. Eventually a lady comes along and sunbathes and there's maybe two other people in the water. I wade in to my waist and call it good.

We decide to go to a nearby pizza place. Wow, yes they sell pizza, but the tables have linen. I am wearing a wrinkled beach cover up over wet bathing suit bottoms and carrying a shopping bag with a towel and other stuff which I hook onto the back of my chair. The waiter is very formal, very correct and professional, a beer costs six euros. So I say to Jeff let's leave and I do. Half a block away I realized my bag was back there so Jeff my trusty servant had to go back and retrieve it. Never mind the hotel towel and keys were in there, so was my phone. I am not paying nine dollars for a beer.
Drop back in to the room to change and hang the wet stuff on the balcony to dry.
We went back to the neighbourhood pub and my beer was 2,5 euros or 3,75 C.

I read about a bakery on trip advisor and we found it. Bought a sample of different sweets which they wrapped up like a present. And we had gelato. The best!!

Now it is dark, I am sitting on the terrace - wearing my MEC mid layer as it is cooler at night. 19 C. Jeff is drinking Chino, a local bitter orange drink

- we can see the stars. A lovely summer evening.
We had the little lemon cream boats and are saving the rest for breakfast.

I do have some places booked - like from 16 Nov to 3 Dec I have rooms booked. But I had nothing booked for Sicily until today. I get nervous if I don't have a room so now booked 2 to 4 Nov in Messina. So we just have to tackle from 4 to 16 Nov.
