Good morning from Lucerne. Hey! Look I am getting on another train - certainly getting good use out of my Swiss Rail Pass. After breakfast at the hotel, I geared up and headed to the train station (3 minute walk) bound for Stoos.
Getting to Stoos was a fun travel adventure packed with different modes of transport that made the journey as exciting as the destination! I started with a scenic train ride from Lucerne, through picturesque Swiss countryside with mountains and lakes. However, with the low laying cloud - I didn't see shit! It wasn't until the return train ride later in the afternoon, did I catch the stunning scenery along the way. But I am getting ahead of myself.
Train destination was to Schwyz, and then I hopped on a bus (#501) that took me to the base of Stoos, where the real thrill began - boarding the world’s steepest funicular! This futuristic cable car zoomed up a nearly vertical slope, offering jaw-dropping views of the valley below as I climbed toward the village of Stoos. The funicular had only gone a short way when we were above that low laying cloud exposing the incredible view! Just when I thought the day was going to be a dud! BAM! Beauty all around with endless blue sky.
Stoos is a charming, car-free mountain village in central Switzerland, located at 1 300 metres above sea level. Once at the top (Fronalpstock), I was able to begin a hike along the breathtaking mountain ridge - quite the panoramic hike. A lot of people bring their dogs here - so cute. I was alos very impressed with the number of families with younger children, many of them decked out with the best hiking gear, some strapped in to a backpack carrier. So glad I chose the t-shirt today - shorts would have been good too!
I missed the funicular going back down the mountain by only a minute or two because I really had to pee. I was frustrated at first, but then I realized this gave me the perfect excuse to indulge in some impromptu shopping at the gift shop! Again, I needed the magnet!
Caught the #501 bus to return to the train station, to do the journey now in reverse. Approaching the time for the train departure and I am still on the bus. But we made the connection with 4 minutes to spare. Ok, I understand the efficiency factor - but I love a little more time-cushion than that!
The weather back in Lucerne was absolutely beautiful, so I needed to make the most of it and headed to Old Town to check it out in the light of day. As the day draws to a close, I can’t help but reflect on another Swiss hiking adventure that was truly unforgettable. Although I am not going to lie...all the climbing has been a good workout - I look forward to some flatter ground...and just when I think it is flat...oh look - stairs! LOL
Time for a cocktail!!!
