Cliffs of Moher, Caherconnell Fort, & Poulnabrone Tomb

Community Highlights Europe Cliffs of Moher, Caherconnell Fort, & Poulnabrone Tomb

Today is the final day of our base tour and it was a pack filled day again beginning with an early morning visit to the Cliffs of Moher before any of the other tour buses arrived. We pretty much had the place to ourselves but by the time we left around 10:30am, it was getting packed with tourists!

I am including a few of our better shots.

We then headed to visit the Caherconnell Circle Stone Fort where I took several photos of the circular stone walls and house demarcations etc. Of course, this is an excavation but these forts were not defensive forts but living quarters for the well to to and influential inhabitants thousands of years ago. The wall surrounded the few houses that were also in stone with thatched roofs which of course are not there now. The farm hands and slaves lived in the open air outside of the circle walls. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caherconnell_Stone_Fort

Our final stop was the Poulnabrone burial tomb -- one of approximately 170+ across Ireland but this is the most frequently visited and photographed. It dates back to the neolithic periods between a bout 4100-2900 BC which is pretty amazing. Here are a few photos that we took to compare with the ones on Wikipedia!

The final bit of trivia from our stay at the Falls Hotel and Spa in Ennistymon is that it is the former home of Dylan Thomas and his wife Caitlin. The hotel has several old framed photographs of Dylan and Caitlin hanging in the hotel.

We have our farewell dinner tonight and only 6 out of the 16 people in our base tour are continuing on for the post-trip which begins bright and early tomorrow morning at 8:30am when we leave for the Dingle Peninsula!
