After breakfast we started up the A590 to Sizergh Castle and managed without getting lost. We’re National Trust members so parked and entered free; however, the eleven o’clock tour was one GBP each but very worth it. We explored the garden until tour time and met our guide at the front door. She was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed the tour. However, the library was not open for the tour so we were determined to return and visit it as the library is always our favorite room.

When the tour ended, we walked over to the National Trust Tea Room and got Swede soup, a cheese scone and dessert with a nice hot pot of tea. They couldn’t tell us what a Swede was, but it was somewhat carrot-like although not as sweet. Not exciting, but warm on a chilly day. (Later learned the swede is a hybrid vegetable that comes from cross-breeding a cabbage and a turnip. It seems to be called a Rutabaga here at home.)

After lunch we returned to the now-open castle sans guide to explore in more depth. There were several rooms open that were not on the tour including two bedrooms and the library, always my favorite room. We went through it all and then headed into the garden. They have a group of acers that are over a hundred years old and stunning. We covered the garden, went through the barn with off-and-on rain and finally reclaimed the car and drove home.

Checked email and transferred photos before driving in to Hartley’s for dinner. Ed got the sea bass and I got the pork medallions with roasted vegetables and a poached pear . . . fabulous.. Ed got ice cream and I got a flourless chocolate cake for dessert. Great dinner.

We’re supposed to have rain tomorrow. So far, we’ve had at least some rain every single day . . .
