Notre Dame de Paris and the new steeple from the bus by Beausoleil
We were taking the bus from our apartment to the Picasso Museum and as we drove along the Seine, we could see the construction equipment and the brand new steeple replaced on Notre Dame. You can see the two front church towers at the top right of the photo.

Chartres - View of Cathedral Notre Dame from the Eure River by Beausoleil
A friend took a photo from here many years ago and I wanted to find the spot. You just walk along the Eure River until you find the little parking area and look up and see the magnificent cathedral. It's the perfect view.

Chartres - Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres - One of the Rose Windows by Beausoleil
The stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral are held to be one of the best-preserved and most complete set of medieval stained glass, notably celebrated for their colors, especially their cobalt blue usually referred to as "Chartres Blue". I've always been fascinated by the Choir sculptures, a stone wall with sculpted scenes that tell the story of Mary and Jesus. The wall is over 6 meters tall and 100 meters long, and has four levels: a base, clerestory, 40 niches, and a stone lace crown. The wall was commissioned in the 16th century to keep the laity out of the liturgical choir. On our previous trip they were in the process of being cleaned so we didn't see all of them. On this trip, the cleaning was done and it was magnificent. If you can't read, this is the bible in stone and in the Middle Ages, most people couldn't read. Another favorite part of the church is the ancient stone floor. It is worn and polished to a sheen. Every time I see it, I wonder how many people have walked there before me. There is an incredible feeling of history and continuity here.

Chartres - Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres by Beausoleil
Chartres is famous for the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres and its stained glass windows. I've always been fascinated by the mismatched towers and inside, the ancient floor. It's my favorite church anywhere and if we are in the area, we always visit. The town has a lot to offer too. You can visit the Cathedral and then across the street is a wonderful stained glass museum and behind the church is the Chartres Beaux Arts Museum. The river Eure goes through town and the Tourist Office has a free brochure with a river walk that is lovely. We've even done it in the rain. The Old Town section is fun to visit and there are a couple other magnificent churches in town. All this is walkable.

Notre Dame de Paris - the New Spire by Beausoleil
We were in Paris just after the horrible fire at Notre Dame so were curious to see what had been done in the five years since. They had just replaced the spire and the Cathedral is supposed to open to the public this coming December. No one thought they could do it in five years, but it seems they have succeeded. It is currently surrounded by construction equipment but they have a wonderful photo exhibit out front that has photographs of all the workers. It has everyone from the carpenters, sculptors, masons, equipment operators, art restorers, everyone . . . they all deserve a tremendous amount of credit.
