Hiking in the Alps

Community Highlights Photography Hiking in the Alps

Good morning, beautiful blue sky...you are music to my eyes! Well, the weather is always changing in the mountains so you just never know from moment to moment...but the morning started off not too bad! Today I am venturing to Schynige Platte. I departed from Interlaken Ost station for the train ride to Wilderswil...then onto the cog train - which moved very slowly, due to the incline. There are 67 bends, with 4 tunnels along the 7 km of track. But I finally arrived at the top...time to hike!

The Schynige Platte hiking trails are scenic route in the Bernese Alps, offering panoramic views of the iconic Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains, as well as Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. I started at the Schynige Platte mountain station. The many trails wind through alpine meadows and offer diverse landscapes, including lush forests and rocky ridges. Just be sure to stay on the trail - use the trail markers. Some sections were a bit challenging, but I just took my time. Taking lots of pictures was a good excuse to stop and catch my breath! haha.

The views kept getting better and better as the morning went along, as more and more of the cloud cover started to burn off. Walking along the ridge with the lakes on one side and Jungfrau and Eiger Mountains on the other was such an incredible experience. The very tall mountain peaks have consistently been shrouded in fog and cloud the entire time I have been here. So glad I did not waste my money heading up to that tourist trap only to see absolutely nothing! I have hiked quite a few trails throughout my travels and this one definitely ranks up there. Stunning. Beautiful. Incredible...awe inspiring!

Since I still had the majority of the afternoon, I decided to venture off to the city of Bern by train. It took less than an hour to get there. It's a city with some UNESCO Heritage buildings, so they look pretty. But if I am coming to Switzerland, I want to stay closer to the mountains. This is the place were many locals jump in the river and ride the current home once their work day is done. Check it out on YouTube - it is a thing! No swimmers today...season over.
