After a quick breakfast at Flisvos Hotel we walked the three blocks on level ground to the bus depot.
16 E each to Heraklion, we have to change buses about half way. Then board another bus from Heraklion to Chania. It's going to be a long day. The road is very twisty, we are either climbing up a mountain or descending a mountain, the first hour is the worse, we stop frequently to pick up passengers by the side of the road or venture into little towns to pick them up. The sharp bends in the road make for slow going and we both feel a bit of motion sickness, Close your eyes, breathe,
The scenery is spectacular when not hidden by trees or the side of a mountain. It is overcast but still 24 C and will get warmer. Crete is enjoying July temperatures in the middle of Oct!! Unusually warm for this time of year
For the first leg of the journey there is lots of room but the bus we transfer to is packed. From a geological point of view Crete is a big mountain jutting out of the Mediterranean
For the most part these buses do not follow the main divide highway. We can't get a seat together. But the road is not so twisty and for a time we drive on a divided highway and can make better progress. We arrive in Heraklion at 1215 - 3.5 hours for the first leg of our trip. We decide to wait for the 130 bus back to Chania. Although I am first in line for this bus a local pushes in front of me. Greeks don't queue. There is a bus manager in Heraklion and he is interesting to wàtch. Very expressive and usually cheerful, really animated when upset.
Still I was second on the bus and since it wasn't crowded we each got our own seats.
There are lots of different plants and trees here. Oleander is native to Crete
Reeds, tall grasses, line the road at times, 8 feet or more tall.
There are palm trees and a kind of fern like tree:
Our trip started at 845 and we got to Chania at 430. Long day on these three different buses!
We are staying at Erin's guest house again, four blocks.
We are struck by the throngs of tourists in the old town and glad to reach our home for the next two nights, same room, same leafy patio.
Eventually we ventured out for dinner .
It had grown dark. A street musician was playing a flute, beautiful and haunting music
The moon shone above the church of the three Martyrs on the square
TRIMARTIRI CATHEDRAL:
The landmark church of Chania city in the Old Town.
The iconic church has a turbulent history spanning six centuries.
There is historical evidence that there was a church in the spot since the 14th century and the architecture is of the Venetian style. During Ottoman times it was - horrors- converted to a soap factory which offended the locals but has since been restored.
15 October - another blue sky day in Chania
We walked to the old Venetian Harbour. It is about 25 C with a nice breeze from the water. We stopped at our usual place for lunch
On the way we passed these stone steps which I had to climb during our walking tour last week
An old lady was begging across the street from our guesthouse so I took her picture from our stairwell
Actually you see very few beggars in Chania Town
Some gypsy kids are around at night playing instruments as they weave their way through outdoor cafes.
For supper we had gyros and putting French Fries on them seems to be a thing here
