On the road between Rouen and Lyons-la-Forêt by Beausoleil
Lyons-la-Forêt is a favorite village of ours. It is very picturesque, historic and has a couple nice restaurants. The drive to it is rural and absolutely lovely.

Castle grounds from the tower by Beausoleil
We had discovered the Château de Fougères-sur-Bièvre while driving through the Loire years ago and then discovered there was another Château de Fougères in Brittany and vowed to find it some day. On a recent trip we were close so planned a night stopover at Fougères to visit the "other" Château de Fougères. They are quite different but both impressive. We found both towns to be friendly, helpful and welcoming and both châteaux fascinating with lots of activities. This photo overlooks the castle ruins and gives a glance at the newer town on the opposite hill.

Château de Rochefort-en-Terre by Beausoleil
We were spending a month exploring the farthest west reaches of the Loire and happened upon Rochefort-en-Terre. It is one of the Plus Beaux Villages of France and they are always worth a visit. The village was much more impressive than the château but the views from the grounds were fabulous.

Back at La Chaumiére for Lunch by Beausoleil
We rented a thatched cottage in the Brière Regional Natural Park and settled in for the week. On laundry day we stay close to home so reserved at La Chaumiére Restaurant nearby that was recommended by our hosts. It was tucked off the road and nearly invisible with nothing near it. We found it and were so glad. Not only was it crowded; the food was absolutely wonderful and the couple who own and run it are completely charming. Great find. Grey Heron (Héron cendré) by Beausoleil
We were staying in the Brière Regional Natural Park and took a boat trip through the canals at Bréca where I spotted this marvelous grey heron. We saw lots of different birds on the boat trip which is hand-poled through the water so very quiet.

Harbor and château in Pornic by Beausoleil
My husband loves the sea so Pornic was a must-see on this trip. We were delighted to find a restaurant on the harbor in a hotel named Beau Soleil. We never miss anyplace with our name on it so we had lunch there. Great fun.

Château de Brézé Vineyard by Beausoleil
We were in the far western Loire Valley but still, it is the Loire Valley, so there were lots of châteaux. Château de Brézé was one we visited and discovered no restaurants nearby so we drove to nearby Fontevraud Abbey for lunch and then returned to the château for our visit. I'd love to visit again later in the year when the grape leaves change color. It must be beautiful.
Château de Brézé underground by Beausoleil
There is a lot of uneven ground, climbing, stairs, ramps and low ceilings. It is lighted but not brightly. Wear sturdy shoes and perhaps bring a flashlight (torch).

Château de Saumur with sunshine by Beausoleil
During our stay near Saumur, it seemed to rain every day so we were delighted when we left the restaurant across from the Château de Saumur to discover the sun had come out and the world was cheerful again.
