Eglise Saint-Sulpice in Paris - You see Delacroix as you enter and exit by Beausoleil
We were in Saint Sulpice this time for an afternoon organ recital. They alternate between 10 AM and 4 PM recitals on alternate Sundays. Times change so it's a good idea to check their web site before planning to attend. The last time we were there, the recital was after the 11 o'clock Mass on Sundays. The organ is amazing though so you do want to attend at least one recital there. Also don't miss the marvelous Delacroix in the chapel on your right as you enter the church. The gnomon that was featured in the movie, The Da Vinci Code is also in this church.

Eglise Saint Sulpice in Paris - waiting for the recital to start by Beausoleil
Saint Sulpice has one of the most magnificent organs in Paris and we took full advantage of living nearby for a month. We always arrived at concerts and recitals early so we could get good seats. Two of the concerts had the advantage of a large-screen television in the front of the church so you could actually see the organist while he performed. That was wonderful.

Eglise Saint-Germain-Des-Prés - the organ by Beausoleil
On April 23, 558, the first abbey church was dedicated to the Holy Cross and Saint Vincent of Zaragoza. The abbey was a royal necropolis until the creation of the basilica of Saint-Denis. Saint-Germain-Des-Prés has the oldest bell tower in Paris. Begun in 990 by Abbot Morard, the bell tower-porch was completed in 1170. At that time, it included a front porch which was destroyed by a storm and rebuilt in 1604. Above the entrance door, the lintel represents the Last Supper. On each side, eight statue-columns represented, according to Benedictine scholars, Merovingian kings that unfortunately were destroyed during the Revolution. At the 1000th anniversary of the bell tower in 2014 there were impressive reenactments and programs. Currently, the entire church is undergoing a restoration. There is information on the church web site about it. At one point when they were restoring the stunning ceiling, they offered the opportunity to donate a star so our oldest daughter gave me a Saint-Germain-Des-Prés star for Mother's Day that year. On the web site you can actually find it with your name on it. We quickly discovered that standing on the church floor and looking up, it is nearly impossible to find it. The restoration so far is absolutely beautiful. The first time we saw the church it looked ancient, dingy and unloved. The last time we visited, we saw an amazing transformation. If a church should project glory, this one now does . . . and they aren't even finished.

The Cavaillé-Coll Organ in Saint Sulpice Church - Paris by Beausoleil
Eglise Saint Sulpice iis rather confusingly designated the second largest church in Paris by some writers and the third largest church by other writers. I'll let them fight it out. It is very large. There are several reasons to visit it. We love to go to the organ concerts there. In 1862, the current pipe organ, constructed by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, was added to the church and it is magnificent. It has 6600 pipes and five ranks and a sound that you can feel in your bones. Only the organ in Saint Eustache in Paris is larger. Saint Sulpice also has a gnomon specifically designed to determine the traditional date of Easter, which corresponded to the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. The device has a brass, north-south meridian running up through the middle of the obelisk, with a brass ball at the top and you can follow the brass line on the floor of the church. As you enter the church, to your right is the Angels' Chapel that has three murals by Delacroix. As you exit the church, you face Place Saint Sulpice that holds the beautiful Fontaine des Quatre Évêques (Four Bishops Fountain) or Fontaine Saint-Sulpice or Fountain of the Orators. It's one of my favorite fountains in Paris but in June it is covered by the many tents set up for the Poesie Market held there each year. This last June we got a few pictures before the Market went up but the water had already been turned off. Go in July through May if you want a good view.

Mirepoix - Eglise Saint-Maurice - rose window by Beausoleil
Saint Maurice is listed on Google Maps and many other places as a Cathedral but it hasn't been the seat of a bishop since 1801. It is the parish church of Mirepoix and important because it has the second widest nave of a gothic church in Europe. Only Girona in Spain is wider. In medieval times, the Bishop of Mirepoix was seated here and it was officially a cathedral. It was renovated at one time by Viollet-le-Duc and is still impressive with twelve side altars and much of the paint remaining.
