Eglise Saint-Sulpice in Paris - You see Delacroix as you enter and exit by Beausoleil
We were in Saint Sulpice this time for an afternoon organ recital. They alternate between 10 AM and 4 PM recitals on alternate Sundays. Times change so it's a good idea to check their web site before planning to attend. The last time we were there, the recital was after the 11 o'clock Mass on Sundays. The organ is amazing though so you do want to attend at least one recital there. Also don't miss the marvelous Delacroix in the chapel on your right as you enter the church. The gnomon that was featured in the movie, The Da Vinci Code is also in this church.

The Cavaillé-Coll Organ in Saint Sulpice Church - Paris by Beausoleil
Eglise Saint Sulpice iis rather confusingly designated the second largest church in Paris by some writers and the third largest church by other writers. I'll let them fight it out. It is very large. There are several reasons to visit it. We love to go to the organ concerts there. In 1862, the current pipe organ, constructed by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, was added to the church and it is magnificent. It has 6600 pipes and five ranks and a sound that you can feel in your bones. Only the organ in Saint Eustache in Paris is larger. Saint Sulpice also has a gnomon specifically designed to determine the traditional date of Easter, which corresponded to the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. The device has a brass, north-south meridian running up through the middle of the obelisk, with a brass ball at the top and you can follow the brass line on the floor of the church. As you enter the church, to your right is the Angels' Chapel that has three murals by Delacroix. As you exit the church, you face Place Saint Sulpice that holds the beautiful Fontaine des Quatre Évêques (Four Bishops Fountain) or Fontaine Saint-Sulpice or Fountain of the Orators. It's one of my favorite fountains in Paris but in June it is covered by the many tents set up for the Poesie Market held there each year. This last June we got a few pictures before the Market went up but the water had already been turned off. Go in July through May if you want a good view.

Climbing down to the garden at the Delacroix Museum by Beausoleil
The Delacroix Museum is one of the hidden treasures of Paris. We usually go on a free first Sunday and it has never been crowded. First you have to find it which is a challenge. It is near Église Saint-Germain-des-Prés at 6 rue de Fürstenberg, but when you get to Place de Fürstenberg, you don't see it. Look for number 6 and simply walk in. There is an empty courtyard and the museum door has two flags over it. If you're lucky the will have the sign out that day. It is marked once you are standing right in front of it even if the sign isn't out. There is a small art collection, some fascinating studies of Delacroix paintings and a delightful hidden garden.

Entrance to the Delacroix Museum by Beausoleil
This entrance is hidden inside 6 rue Fürstenberg. They do finally have signs outside that make you feel better about going into the empty courtyard. The museum is free on the first Sunday of the month and there is a lovely garden inside. It's a small museum but very nicely done.
