Bibliothèque Nationale de France - Richelieu - spiral staircase by Beausoleil
The Bibliothèque Nationale de France - Richelieu is across the street from Le Grand Colbert Brasserie and we saw an advertisement on their fence for an exhibit. Took a chance and went in to ask about it and it sounded interesting so we entered. There were marvelous 14th and 15th century copies of medieval manuscripts and photos were allowed. The highlight for me was the window into the actual library reading room. It is magnificent, four stories high packed with books and even better, packed with people reading them.

Exhibit - National Archeology Museum in Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye by Beausoleil
Henri II Renaissance in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a special exhibit at the Musée d’Archéologie Nationale et Domaine National de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Henri II was King of France from 31 March 1547 until his death in 1559. He was married to Catherine d'Medici and his mistress was the famous Diane de Poitiers to whom he gifted the lovely Château de Chenonceau famously reclaimed by Catherine at Henri's death in 1559. Diane was left with Château de Chaumont. In the chapel at the end of the exhibit, there was a tv screen running a short movie on Henri II and life during his reign.

Illumination - The Marmottan-Monet Museum - Paris by Beausoleil
There was a special exhibit at the Marmottan-Monet while we were on our 55th anniversary trip to Paris. The museum has the largest collection of the works of Claude Monet including his 1872 "Impression, Sunrise" that gave the name to Impressionism. They also have a stunning collection of Berthe Morisot and another of illuminated medieval manuscripts. Add the beautiful Ranelagh Park next to the museum, and it is a marvelous day in Paris.

Lindisfarne Heritage Centre Quilt and Saint Cuthbert display by Beausoleil
Excellent small museum tracing the island history with exhibits on the Vikings, the ancient Christian monks, the fishing industry and birding. There is a facsimile of the Lindisfarne Gospels and an interactive exhibit that lets you look through the Lindisfarne Gospels on a computer. (The actual Lindisfarne Gospel is in the British Museum if you want to see the original.)

Entrance to the Museum of Letters and Manuscripts in Paris by Beausoleil
This museum is on blvd. St. Germain and a little hard to find because the entrance is inside this doorway. The signs are quite small as you can see. It is definitely worth searching out.

Minerve - Museum of Archaeology and Prehistory by Beausoleil
The region around Minerve has been occupied since prehistory, and some of the artefacts from the area can be seen in the small Museum of Archaeology and Prehistory definitely worth a visit. In 1210 a group of Cathars escaped from Béziers that was under attack in the Albigensian crusade and found refuge in the heavily fortified village of Minerve. It took the brutal Simon de Montfort six weeks of siege, but eventually the village gave in after a catapult bombardment destroyed the only well in the village. Following the surrender of the town 140 cathars were burned at the stake. There is a reconstruction of the catapult, called a malvoisine, across the river from the south posterne or gate. The church, Église Saint-Etienne has the year 456 engraved on the altar. The church is 11th Century but the altar comes from Saint-Nazaire church that formerly was in the cemetery and was a staging area for one of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage routes. Saint-Nazaire is gone but the altar was saved and placed in Église Saint-Etienne. Standing outside the church and beside the Mairie (town hall) is The Dove , a sculpture by J.-L. Séverac (1982), a commemorative stele to the 140 Cathar Perfects who were burnt at the stake in 1210. It is assumed that the devastation took place at the confluence of the Cesse and Briant rivers at the foot of the town.
