Stained Glass and a Crucifix in Chartres Cathedral by Beausoleil
Books have been written about Chartres Cathedral and I encourage you to read some of them. It is my absolute favorite cathedral in the entire world (not that my research pool is terribly large) and I'm not sure what it is that attracts me. The first time we visited Chartres was fortunately a sunny day so the stained glass was spectacular. However, I was more struck by the floor of the ancient church. It was very worn stone and the sun shining through the stained glass windows onto the floor worn slick by 800 years of feet caught my imagination. I could not begin to imagine the number of people who had trod the floor before me and who would continue to walk there long after I had left. There are 176 stained glass windows and the color most overwhelming is the famous Chartres blue. I'm not sure if the windows or their reflections on the floor or the white choir screen are the more beautiful. Another thing that enchanted me on my first viewing that still delights me after many years is the beautiful white choir screen. It's a later addition to the church having been finished in 1714 but the perfection of the tiny stories in stone surrounding the altar is sheer magic. It has recently been cleaned so is even more beautiful than previously.

The Cross, by cousins Tanguy Lefébure and Thomas de Lussac by Beausoleil
The Cross, by cousins Tanguy Lefébure and Thomas de Lussac. Early in 2019 the two artists proposed 2 crosses in 1 to be placed on the already painted Tree of Life above the altar. One cross would be laser-cut steel and the other, inside the steel cross, would be made in the traditional way and gilded. The cross is lit by LED lights hidden in the structure that will allow the radiation of the gold and illuminate the Tree of Life. It was placed in 2019.

Église Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais - Oak Crucifix by Antoine-Augustin Préault by Beausoleil
This statue of Christ carved in oak by Antoine-Augustin Préault (1809-1879) is in the Chapel of the Virgin at St. Gervais. There are also statues from the funeral monument of Michel Tellier (1603–1685) the Chancellor of Louis XIV, by Pierre Mazeline (1632–1685) and Simon Hurtelle (1648–1724). The figures include the Chancellor, in prayer; a weeping 'genie' praying at his feet; and two draped figures representing Faith and Religion. Two other figures from the group, Justice and Prudence, are found in the Louvre.

Église Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais by Beausoleil
Eglise Saint Gervais was built over a period of nearly one hundred and fifty years with long periods of interruption. The new facade was added in the early 17th century so when you look at the baroque facade, walking inside to the gothic interior is a bit of a surprise . . . but a delightful one.

Nave of Église Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais by Beausoleil
The nave of the church (1600–1620) is notable for its dramatic height and the simplicity and purity of its lines. While the lower level of the nave is late gothic, the upper level of the nave shows the influence of the Renaissance, with large semi-circular arches containing a series of large stained glass windows, filling the church with light. The upper windows are 21st-century, by Claude Courageux, illustrating the story of Adam and Eve, Noah's ark, and the patriarchs and their spouses. These were installed in the early 2000s. Eglise Saint Gervais was built over a period of nearly one hundred and fifty years with long periods of interruption. The new facade was added in the early 17th century so when you look at the baroque facade, walking inside to the gothic interior is a bit of a surprise . . . but a delightful one.

Saint Mary's Church - Cross by Beausoleil
The church was built in the 12th century. It was once a large church with two towers (west and central), but in the English Civil War was largely destroyed during the siege of Scarborough Castle just above the church. The church was rebuilt in the late 17th century and restored in the mid 19th century. The church graveyard holds the grave of Anne Brontë, who died in Scarborough in 1849.

Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Pickering by Beausoleil
We arrived in Pickering Saturday afternoon and found St. Joseph's Church within an easy walk to our cottage. The Mass wasn't until 11:00 AM which made for a lovely leisurely day. It was a small, friendly community and the nearby Memorial Hall was having a local art show which was fun.

The Cross of Jerusalem at Rocamadour by Beausoleil
From the middle level of Rocamadour you can follow the Way of the Cross to the very top. We've done it in rain and in sun, sun is better. At the very top is the beautiful Cross of Jerusalem with amazing views over the Lot Valley.

Basilique de Saint-Sauveur at Rocamadour by Beausoleil
Rocamadour is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has also been a pilgrimage site on the 'Way of Saint James" for hundreds of years. It exists on three levels climbing a near vertical cliff. There is an elevator from level 1 to level 2 and an escalator to the top. You may climb 216 steps from level 1 to level 2 (on your knees if you are a pilgrim) and there is a beautiful "Way of the Cross" from level 2 to the top.

Small part of the cemetery at the Douaumont Ossuary near Verdun by Beausoleil
My Grandfather was sent to Verdun. Fortunately, his ship was slow and he arrived when it was over. It must have been horrible because he would never talk about it.
