Église Saint Gervais et Saint Protais from rue des Barres (the back) by Beausoleil
Rue des Barres is a pedestrian street that goes behind Église Saint Gervais et Saint Protais. There is one marvelous medieval half-timbered house on a corner and a delightful religious bookstore before you get to a most pleasant café at the end.

Place Baudoyer, a market place beside Église Saint Gervais et Saint Protais by Beausoleil
When you exit St. Gervais and turn right, you come to a narrow street you follow for one block to Place Baudoyer. It is a lovely market open on Wednesday and Saturday and one of very few markets open in the afternoons. The other side opens to rue de Rivoli.

Église Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais by Beausoleil
Eglise Saint Gervais was built over a period of nearly one hundred and fifty years with long periods of interruption. The new facade was added in the early 17th century so when you look at the baroque facade, walking inside to the gothic interior is a bit of a surprise . . . but a delightful one.

Nave of Église Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais by Beausoleil
The nave of the church (1600–1620) is notable for its dramatic height and the simplicity and purity of its lines. While the lower level of the nave is late gothic, the upper level of the nave shows the influence of the Renaissance, with large semi-circular arches containing a series of large stained glass windows, filling the church with light. The upper windows are 21st-century, by Claude Courageux, illustrating the story of Adam and Eve, Noah's ark, and the patriarchs and their spouses. These were installed in the early 2000s. Eglise Saint Gervais was built over a period of nearly one hundred and fifty years with long periods of interruption. The new facade was added in the early 17th century so when you look at the baroque facade, walking inside to the gothic interior is a bit of a surprise . . . but a delightful one.
