Libreville

Introduction

Libreville is the capital and the largest city in Gabon and has a population of roughly 600,000. It is a port city on the Komo river near the Gulf of Guinea. The city was founded in 1843 as a trading port, where slaves waited for their transportation. Nowadays, it functions as the financial and industrial hart, but lacks any significant features for travellers, although the nightlife is supposed to be very good and infrastructure in general (unlike most of the country) is fairly organised as well. On the other hand, the city is definitely not known for its safety, especially after dusk.

Weather

Libreville is hot and humid year round, with average temperatures around 30 °C during the day and 25 °C at night. The June to August period is both drier and less hot. The rest of the year there is a significant amount of rain in most months, with the wettest period from March to May, but the wettest month being October with over 400 mm of rain.

By Plane

Libreville Leon M'ba International Airport (LBV) is where all international flights depart and arrive. Gabon Airlines flies to Paris and Pointe-Noire. Avirex Gabon flies to and from Bamako, Brazzaville, Cotonou, Douala, Lomé, Malabo, Ouagadougou and Pointe-Noire. Air Service Gabon flies to Brazzaville, Sao Tomé, Douala and N'Djamena.

Within the country, Avirex Gabon flies between Libreville and Port Gentil. Air Service Gabon flies between Libreville and Franceville, Port-Gentil, Makokou, Mouila, Oyem and Tchibanga.
