The Best Areas to Stay in Beijing for Any Budget

Beijing is China's capital city and was host to the 2008 Olympic Games which means there's an abundance of budget accommodation available to the traveller. Beijing also has a modern transport system that can easily take you from your hotel to any of the cities districts including many popular tourist attractions.

Dongcheng is the heart of Beijing's main tourist district with the Forbidden city and Tienanmen Square within walking distance to the budget accommodation area. Similarly Xuanwu is a newly renovated area where savvy budget travellers can find a bargain. While Chongwen and Chaoyang to the south are close to embassies, parks, shopping centres and monuments.

Dongcheng District

This district is without doubt the most popular area for tourists and is also conveniently located in the very heart of Beijing. World famous sights such as the Forbidden City, Tienanmen Square, The Chinese National Museum along with a host of theatres and museums are all within walking distance of each other.

Ideally suited to the budget traveller the Dongcheng area also has a host of cheap restaurants, food stalls and night markets. Beijing Central Station is located in this district making it ideal for further trips around this big capital city or further out to sights such as The Great Wall of China.

Chongwenmen

Chongwenmen makes up part of Dongcheng but is worth mentioning on its own as it is a particularly popular place to stay.

In Chongwenmen budget accommodation can be limited, however the prices in the area might just be enticing enough to take that chance. The district is just south of the central Dongcheng area and famous for its small side streets north of Hong Qiao Market. Filled with local stores, cafés and restaurants it can be a rewarding experience and a great place to eat cheaply.

For families Beijing Amusement Park is located here but perhaps more interestingly walks to the Ming Dynasty City Wall Site Park and the huge Temple of Heaven make this an appealing area to stay.

Xicheng District

Looking for the budget backpackers' accommodation area or cheapest accommodation in Beijing? Then Xichieng's hotels & hostels will surely fit the bill. While it doesn't have any tourist sights in its location per se, it is still within reasonable walking distance to Tienanmen square and the Forbidden City. The area is more popularly known for its old pre-WWII stores and theatres. A working class area, Xichieng is filled with the cheapest accommodation in Beijing.

Chaoyang

Outside of Beijing's inner city and away from popular tourist sights Chaoyang appeals to shoppers and those looking for a glimpse of the Olympic Games. A visit to the National Stadium or the "Bird's Nest" is also a must see when in this part of Beijing. Surrounding this area are architectural sights such as CCTV building, Beijing's tallest building the World Trade Tower III and a massive collection of shopping centres. This area is also host to many embassies making it a good location for those needing travel essential visas.
